For all student externs in the Memphis area...
Yes, they are right there are lots of new grads and lots of people moving from techs to interns etc. I can give you the name of the nurse recruiter I spoke with from Baptist if you like, send me a PM if you'd like it. Also, I don't know which you would qualify for, but by going to baptistnurses.org you can see whats available. type in intern or tech

Waiting on ATT letter...
our school just likes to take it slow, and took forever mailing things off.. anyways, my question was to anyone that has yahoo email, did it come to your main email or in your bulk/junk box? and also what is the name/subject line i should be looking for? I get SO many emails most of them junk that I just delete i am so scared i am going to overlook it, but when I get around 200 reg emails daily and then 500 or so junk ones, it gets really boring READING all the headlines!! Thanks!!

any info about baptist hospital
Well, I have been an intern for Baptist East, and I have now signed with them, the floor I am on has a 14 week long orientation. As far as CNA's/PCA's go, the only time I notice that they are short is on the weekends, the same with secretaries, I worked in the float pool so I saw all the different floors, and of course I have seen bad patient ratios, but I have seen acceptable ratios too. You will have bad days anywhere you work, I say this now, I suppose we'll see after working for a month or two!

For all student externs in the Memphis area...
Ok, there is a lot you can and can't do. Like I said base pay is 16.61 weekend (starts friday at 3 pm) is 1.66 and evening 3-11 is .99 they stack on top of each other. Not sure for night, never worked it. You are not supposed to do blood sugars, mess with iv pumps, administer medicine, etc. However, baptist offers a phlebotomy class for interns you can go to then you can get checked off then can draw blood on your floor. Good experience. You can do dressing changes and assist the nurse with VARIOUS things, it all depends on the relationship you have with her/him. Of course you also do Vitals I&O's help PCA's with linen changes and baths helping pt's to BSC's that kinda thing, baptist has also gone live with their computer charting and so you get to chart everything on computer after getting paid to go through the class! They also have tons of education classes that I found beneficial for my classes. There will be more openings once the Dec. graduates graduate! Good Luck!

How do you learn to give injections?
we practiced on the injection pads also.. which to me do little justice... i was dx'ed with type 1 diabetes when i was 15.. and they made me stick an orange... i stuck it so much it got bloated and seeped fluid.. that didn't help much but i sure know how to do my finger sticks and sub q... i offered anyone that was unsure about subq to do an insulin one on me... no takers... hmmm... i think that we should get to stick each other.. they used to do it at our school but stopped... some people get out of school without giving an IM shot.. not many... but i know for a fact most get out with givin a TB shot... but as they say... nursing school only gets u the basics... u learn the most once u get out...

charting.... critique?
the only thing that I noticed that hasn't been stressed which might just be a school thing... which you might want to consider since your IN school in all.. we have to chart every 2 hours and in the charting we have to note some kind of safety...like... bed in low locked position... call light within reach... room uncluttered... SR up X 2... adequate lighting... it's kinda CYA if u think about it... if that pt. falls.. you can ensure at this time when you went in and saw them you noted that the bed was locked and in low position they had none slip footwear and nothing was cluttered for them to trip over... so the chair that suddenly appeared that they fell over had to be moved there by someone...??? ya know?

This may seem like a dumb question, but they always say there is none
that also happened to me when i first started... the teachers just always said.. "the answer is on the page" ok.. well duh... i would always get it down to 2 and 8 out of 10 times pick the wrong one... it was hard to me... but it has taken me several semesters... but i try not to think TOO much into it... and what helps me is not to think about situations i have experienced.. like oh yea we had a patient the other day and this is what we did with him... because just like with the nclex... it's the perfect graduate rn world... do what you are supposed to do.. no short cut's always keep patient in mind first... the patient that is the most critical... remember your ABC's. hmmm... i often often often thought too much into the questions let me see if i can explain one of the questions and my rationale: Something along the lines of: A patient was getting prepared for a procedure.. as a floor nurse which of the following would be your job to complete: 1. Give the patient all the information and details of the procedure and ask if there are any questions. 2. Set up the room, getting all the supplies needed for the surgery 3. obtain signed consent form 4. assist the pt. to the side lying position. The correct answer is 3. I just knew it wasn't. they stress and stress how important it is that the doctor is supposed to get it signed. bla bla... the teachers stated that in this question that it meant just to get the paper from the patient and ensure that it was signed... bla

Insulin dosaging with proper syringe choice
couldn't it also mean 5ml tuberculin syringe? since that's all they have available? someone just got confused since they were talking about insulin in the beginning maybe?

Insulin dosaging with proper syringe choice
well i got up and scrummaged? is that a word? and looked for an syringes i could find I use the pump now so i don't keep many syringes around but all I found would point to what DTN said.. actually the only ones i found was the 1 ml one's that the pharmacy guy gave me after i begged. It was a holiday... my pump malfunctioned right around the time all things were closing down... i had 1 syringe on stock... we went to 6 store before finding this pharmacy still open... i did everything i could to show this guy that I was diabetic... but as luck would have it i had left my pump at home. I gave him my glucose meter... then i was like i can show him my drivers license! but then i realized hey... i have gotten meds here before... they should be able to look it up... alas! but... of course I had just gotten married..and we had a name change problem... thinking on my feet once again i said well.. call the phone number on file... it'll be my cell... and *ring ring* i prove my self... and he sells me these funny syringes...which leads to this story! lol

Another Pay Question!
I used to live in Jackson we moved to memphis over the summer... couldn't make me work at the main hospital in jackson. I hate having clinicals there. Miserable. Glad I only have 2 clinicals left. Also the pay here is not too bad, and including shift diff is really nice. and for those out there who have spouse's with perfect benefits that don't need benefits of their own.. really got it going on with the money!

Labor and Delivery Paper. Due Monday 11/12/07!!!
technically no once you graduate and take boards you can go straight to L&D you don't have to start down and work up. in nursing school you will have your on section covering lots and lots of L&D stuff... what happens if the baby comes too early... what happens if the baby is born dead? what happens if the mom develops high blood pressure or diabetes during her pregnancy? what happens if the baby is coming out foot first? What calls for a c-section? but L&D you also have to know things about babies as well... what are newborns typical heart rates and blood pressures and respirations and temperatures.. and BLOOD SUGARS! how important it is too keep the baby warm. and the bonding between mother and baby. Emotional support is very important too. good luck
