For All "NEW" Lpn's Over 50

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hi, have a question for those of you "newbie" Lpn's over the age of 50. How are you physically holding up? Considering I am now 54 and hoping to get into the Fall 07 LPN Program, this is of a big concern to me. What type of nursing are you in and how are you doing?

Blessings to all and thank you so much for your replies.

I just turned 40 and my feet ache. I put gel inserts in my shoes and I will get new shoes soon. I have also started walking each day and it helps. Congrats to you DTC on losing 35 lbs.

Gel inserts are a must for nurses!!

I'm not a new grad, but I'm going on 49 (yikes I hate even writing that). I worked in a very busy level one trauma center, 12 hour shift up until July 06 and did fine. With experience, you get organized quickly, prioritize your care so that you keep things efficient and go on.

I am very healthy though 40 # overweight, stay very active, walk a lot and have done fine.

I am not a new grad LVN. But I am am a LVN and I am 53 years old. I work on a cardiac unit. Have 3-4 patients. We all get tired at the end of our 12 hour shift. Age is not a factor. You must learn priortize and you must have a system that allows to to multi-task, give the care you need to give and don't make a mistake. I have a form that I have all pt info I need. SBAR is your friend, know your labs and medications to given and times, and a place for vitals and procedures to accomplish including tests for DX. Nothing to it. Ha!

I am 48 and have been an LPN for 2 months. The only drawback is that everybody looks at me and thinks I have years of experience because of my age.I love the look I get when I tell them how "fresh" I am!!

But what's up with the knees going at 40? I'm too young to be this old!!

Specializes in general practice clinic.

I'm 53 and got my license in March. School was a breeze. I returned to my clinic position and I sleep most weekends away. However, I can outwork the 20 and 30 year olds anyday, but I think that's part of my upbringing. "Always give your employer a full days work and extra."

I have FMS, which I manage carefully, wear good shoes, eat protein at lunch and an occasional B-12 injection never hurts. One reason I returned to school for my license, was that I never wanted to be a WalMart greeter in my old age!!

Ya'll take it easy and have fun! Nursing is a blast, even at my age!:chuckle
