For all those who have take A&P1, I wanted to know if you could shed some light on this topic for me please. I am taking A&P1 this fall (next week I start) and I have not taken science courses in over 10 years now! So I am a little (or a lot) rusty on lab classes especially.
In A&P lab tests, are you dissecting frogs and things like that? Or is it labeling the different parts of the body and such?
Also, how can I make flashcards to help me study? For instance, would I put the name of a bone on the front of the index card and the function of that bone on the back of the card?? I know its a lot of memorization for A&P, but its not vocabulary right??
I just want a heads up to help me prepare. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I think it depends on the teacher. At my school one teacher uses a human cadaver, one uses frogs, and one uses cats. I know thats not much help, but Im looking forward to everyones elses responses on how to study/memorize all of it. I'm taking it this fall semester too. Good Luck!

Depends on what topics/systems you're covering.
Thank you brittany:-) Good luck to you too!

Yeah...depends on the school. At my school, the 1st night we did a cat. We had 4 cadavers and we also did other animal parts along the way like a sheep brain, cow eye, etc. For the lab quizzes...we had a minute at each station. It was tough! Anyway....good luck! Oh and about the flashcards, my husband bought me a box by Barrons. Good luck!

When I took A&P1, our lab practical consisted of different areas about 1-40. At one table there would be a bone and we would have to identify it, the next area would be a microscope and we would have to look at cells. We also used a cat and had to identify muscles. During the semester you will have to label diagrams of bones and muscles. What I did was make several copies before I wrote on it and I would quiz myself. Also, ask your instructor if there will be time available out of class to study the bones and or animal. My instructor gave us the weekend before the practical to come in and do a mock practical for practice. It really helped. Good luck!!!
Thank you all. That really helps me and now I know what I'm in for lol. Study study Study!!!! That's my first, middle and last name lol

I'm retaking A&P and it's been a while since I took it but this explanation is very close to what I recall. We used cat and fetal pig cadavers. When we were studying the histology portion of A&P, we'd have to identify different cell types on microscope slides at different stations. The same sort of system was used for bones, muscles, circulatory system, etc. I was in a study group and luckily we were able to take our cats and pigs home (much to the delight of our families, esp. at dinner time). So we would quiz one another. We'd also spend free time (hahaha) in the lab with the skeleton and quiz one another on bones. There are so many good books out there with realistic depictions of everything, that you can get a good review from those, too. As far as flash cards go, I'm going to make some of my own but I may buy a set to supplement. I find that I learn better if I do the work myself. Good luck everyone! Gonna be a great semester!

I just finished A&P1 and was disappointed because the labs were pretty boring...we didn't dissect anything! However, we had two lab practicals which counted as 30% of our final grade. Our first was on mainly on bones. My teacher had our lab set up in stations: there were about 30 stations with a bone with a sticky dot on the portion of the bone we were to identify and an index card asking questions about it; there were also about 10 stations that had microscopes & we'd identify the tissue types and they also had index cards with questions. Our second practical was on muscles and it was much easier! My teacher told us she would be using the pictures right out of the book, so I copied all the pages with muscles, used White-Out to cover the names, and made several copies so that I could label the muscles myself. I made a much better grade on that one!
If I can come out of a science class with an A, I'm sure you'll have no problem! I've been out of school for over 20 years and didn't even complete high school, so all of this was new to me. Good luck!

I took this class years ago, and the only thing i remember is that part of our final exam was on the bones. The prof took apart the skeleton and put indivual bones on the tables (I think there was about 10 bone stations and we had 30 seconds to a minute at each) and we had to a) identify the bone b) determine if it was from the left or right side (if applicable) and c) determine the structure that was marked.
In high school, our final was the cat dissection and identifying everything.
Thank you all sooooo much!!! I really appreciate all your feedback:-)
You guys are the best!!
