Hi - I'm new to the site have gotten much needed information about cardiac nursing. I am wondering if any one has suggestions for SHOES. I have started a 12 hour shift job and my feet are killing me. I have Nurse Mates but they aren't cutting it. Thank you...
Has anyone seen the new dansko sport clogs?? they have a more rugged sole and a wider heel to aviod the wipeouts. they have them at zappos.com which in mine opinion is a great website for shoes. they have free shipping and a 1 year return policy. plus they price match other websites. i am thinking of getting the casey model.
Yes definitely don't use high heel shoes. I had a high clog type nurse mate and even my thigh's hurt from the posture. I use Rocker's by cherokee they work great for me! It has a cusion for arch support inside which is my problem high arches. You can get them online or a uniform store, sometime in jcpenny nurse uniform catlogs. They are usually about 50-60$ with real leather and my one pair lasted me 2 years. I guess it's suppose to be many years but i thought for 50$ comfortable they were worth it.
I've tried numerous shoes. Hated Dansko's. I bought a pair of Birkenstocks and I LOVE them! My feet don't hurt anymore! It takes a week or two for them to be broken in and they are pricey but so worth the cost.
While I am not yet a nurse, Birkenstocks are my preferred comfort shoe of choice. I can wear them all day, be on my feet all day and have no foot pain, no back pain as w/ other shoes. I did buy a pair of nursing shoes from them but have yet to start clinicals.
In civies I have sandals and clogs - both feel better than no shoes. Well worth the $$.
DO a search on this board, there are several threads that discuss this issue. My main input is you get what you pay for. Also your standard tennis shoes, running shoes have life to them typically calculated in miles. Based on 3-12 shifts a week it runs about 6 months at the max and then the support pretty much is worn out of them. Basicly you need to find what works for you and keeps your feet, legs and back from being sore and painfull. One more thing to remember is that uniforms and ect for work are tax deductable- you have to spend a certain amount of your gross income- you would be suprised how much that is
rj:rolleyes:
I worked in running shoes for years, but rjflyn is right: they only have about six months of wear in them. Then you risk injuries if you don't replace them. I work in Dansko Professionals, and the rest of the time wear Dansko clogs or sandles -- I even have a pair of Dansko boots! A pair of Dansko Professionals will last about two years before the insides start to get broken down. They're expensive in stores, but you can sometimes find them on sale. And there's the Dansko outlet: www.danskooutlet.com.

I think that shoe preference depends on where you work. For 12-hour ICU shifts, I've found Dansko professionals great for relieving foot fatigue and helping reducing back strain from reaching over beds and equipment (I'm 5'5"). I did nearly trip a couple of times on uneven surfaces. Since switching to the Dansko sport clogs, I haven't had that problem. They feel slightly broader in the base and have a grippier sole.

Some of the RN's I work with wear Klog brand clogs. I've ordered a pair and am waiting for them to come.
I bought a pair of Z-Coil shoes last year and have not one regret about the price. Most nurses I know easily spend that and more in shoes. A bonus with these shoes is in the spring. Not only can you adjust them, if you walk more on the inside or outside of your foot, but you can replace the springs for only $25/shoe. The shoes I have are leather and easily cleaned. I figure if they last me one more year, I've probably saved money in shoes. I work in a small hospital, and the nearest place to buy them is 2 hrs away, yet there are now approx 5 staff members wearing these shoes. Not only that, but the real kicker is they are a daily topic of talk, esp with pts and their families. If you do decide to possibly buy them, I would suggest walking around the place you are buying them from for atleast 1/2 hr, just to make sure they are the shoe for you. Also, if you buy them, I would have another pair of shoes atleast for the first 2 days of wear. I found I actually walk using different muscles in my legs, and had just a little soreness in the calves, but only for the first 2 days. I love my Z-Coils. :)

Someone mentioned croc before, (I think that's right). Said they were great and cheap, too.
