Food for thought for nursing students.

Published

I was referred to recently as "Just a CNA". Well obviously I have made a smart move in starting my journey to becoming an RN. With my CNA I am working in a hospital where I am learning day to day what a new RN endures. I also have a distinct advantage when I finish my RN in securing a position.

There are nursing jobs available so please do not be discouraged or swayed by members of this site, over time they can become cynical. If you are willing to actually work and be part of a nursing team as a CNA the experience you gain will be worth it's weight in gold. Nothing worth having in life ever comes easy.

And remember when you do become an RN respect and appreciate your CNA because he or she can make or break you career. :yeah:

I am in my Jr. year of my BSN. I have been a hairstylist for 15 years but also worked as a personal service care provider doing in home care for people with Alzheimers. I also do the work of an LNA in an assisted living home although I am not an LNA. The rules are different for assisted living. I love my jobs. Very soon I can "test out" to be an LNA and I plan on doing that so I can get into a hospital. I couldn't find the time for nursing school and LNA school at the same time! I really love working with people.

I could not do half my work without a good CNA help me.

THis was great to read, it can be discouraging trying to work towards becoming an RN. This was right on time! Thanks

Hope63, most definitely I'll keep you posted. I am focused on succeeding in ADN school for now, but my goals are to either work (for the good) in management or as a teacher of nursing. There are many possibilities so I will keep my eyes open to the many new experiences I will have between now and then!

I'm a senior nursing student and would LOVE a job somewhere as a CNA. It's been difficult to find one though, specifically in the hospital. I am still just a nursing student.

I agree. CNA is a great foundation !

I won't be beating anybody up, but the nonphysical aspects of martial arts will help me forever (courtesy, honesty, respect, loyalty, determination, interal fortitude, service, teaching, giving)

I used to be a CNA and now I am an LPN. I am also continuing on to my RN currently. So I have some experience throughout the ranks.

I have heard the you are just a CNA, I have also heard you are ONLY an LPN. " You are not a REAL Nurse." aka RN.

I am a First Year Nursing Student (again) and I am sooooo ready and prepared for this year! I found an AWESOME job working home health and I will tell you what, I will appreciate my RN sooo much more after having this job. I have one on one hands on care with my clients. I am by myself so I have critical thinking constantly in motion, plus I am learning time mgmt, organization, and true pt care! :D

I totally recommend anyone try home health or have a CNA job during school or before.. The experience is priceless:yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah:

Agreed! I plan on getting my CNA Certification and hate the picture painted for us. I've heard horror stories on the way CNAs are treated. What you said, I agreed with 100%! Keep doing what you're doing! They don't hold a bit of meaning to your future. Being a CNA is a smart first choice to get into the health field. No one should be looked down upon for that! It's best to ignore those people the best that you can. :D Good luck everyone!
