Earlier tonight, the username of dean1987 posted a thread title: "Academic dishonesty dilemma! Advice needed, plz..." I applaud that individual on posting that thread and I hoped everything works out for that individual. Anyways, the reason why I'm this thread is that I want to do a follow-up with, according to the thread "Academic dishonesty dilemma! Advice needed, plz..." Here's my follow-up. Not only have I heard about future nursing students cheating on transcripts, but in the classroom as well. I went to a community college my first 2 years. Then, I transfered into a private 2 year college of nursing. Anyways, during my first semester of nursing school, there was a student in my class who actually did cheat. Here's how. One of my classes held an unscheduled meeting with the instructor to go over an exam that majority of my class did not pass. At the beginning of the unscheduled meeting, the instructor said "Nobody to go to the bathroom until we are finished talking about the exam and answers of why this choice is the best answer, etc." Well, one student wanting to go to the bathroom, instructor said "no." Five minutes later, student leaves the room. However, in that student's hands, was the exam itself. Seven students saw that student leave the room with exam in hand. One of the seven students took a picture of that student leaving the room with their camera phone. While the student was gone, 1 of the 7 students told the instructor. The instructor was in complete shock the rest of day. Ten-15 minutes later, the student walks into the room with a fresh photo copy of the exam along with the original copy. That student did not get kicked out of the school. They received an "F" for that class. Oh, it gets better. That student was allowed to repeat that course again and then on top of that that student was also allowed enroll in corse course and be able to graduate this fall. That's complete crap. What also is complete crap is that I found out that this student has a history of cheating and was cheating on exams in another nursing course. The community college that I was at prevously before I entered nursing school. The student was cheating on exams there, too.
Where am I going with this? My point is that I question on the academic standards of what nursing schools will do when a student commits something out of ordinary. The nursing school that I attend talks the talk, but not walks the walk when it comes to rules.
Those that cheat during prerequisites will never make it through nursing school, it's too demanding.
I generally agree. I have known of girls who cheat, and I have probably witnessed it happening in pr-req classes (can't totally prove it). I think its wrong, but I know that they won't make it through nursing school. Even if they do, there is absolutely no way to cheat on the NCLEX, so hopefully that will weed them out. Crime doesn't pay, and I believe that for the most part people who cheat will eventually be weeded out. That being said, I would never "tattle-tell" or "snitch" (whatever you wanna call it) on someone. Right or wrong (I make no argument either way lol) its just the way I was raised. But I will never cheat, and I hope those that do get weeded out. I figure most of them will anyways.
if a person is a habitual cheater, he/she, IMO, would never pass the nclex.... (how could they if they don't study well?) and most likely, he/she will attempt to cheat during the board exam and will be caught! -- that would mean "good bye nursing career" --- .... money and time gone wasted... it's themselves that they actually fooled around with.
Actually they could. Maybe they know enough and only need a good review class. The chances aren't good, but very possible. I personally would not want to work with that person on the floor. Just think about what they will do to "cheat" the patients or their coworkers.
Also, if they cheated to get into nursing school, they probably bumped a few honest hard working students. Instructors really need to be on top of cheating and stop ignoring it.
we had bouts of plagiarism and cheating at my school and they did follow through. the kids failed the class and could try again just one more time. only one of them got caught cheating again and he is out for good.
I taught briefly in a nursing program. I was told that I had to pass students who cheated, who turned in partially and wholly plagiarized term papers, etc., so that the school wouldn't lose their state funding. If everyone who'd cheated had been terminated from the program, I might have graduated 3 students. They do make it through nursing school and they do pass NCLEX, although they don't pass my gurney test and I hope I never have to have some of those students as my nurse.
This post is the most disturbing thing I have read on this subject.
Those that believe they should "look the other way" in life, should never be given responsibility of any kind, IMO. There are many other jobs where you will find happiness, sorry to break the news to you that nursing is not one of them.
