FNP Made to Work Alone?

I work at a FQHC, which is stressful enough, but on occasion I have to work alone. They do not send help when my nurse has to be out. Has anyone else had to go through this? How many M.D.’s do you know of are expected to sometimes work alone? Did you stay at that organization?

I would refuse to work alone. That is a safety issue. If your nurse is out, so are you and tell them, "Yes, I expect to be paid that day."

NO WAY would I do that.

I did that the first time. Unfortunately I did not have any vacation time because I had been out with my mother. They took it from my check. I can’t afford to call in every time, my vacation time is still building.

I have worked at 2 FQHC and neither did that... and I dont think the pt number was ever that high... I would quit or ask for 200k+

I don't think it is acceptable that you have to use your vacation. I think they will do what they can get away with, since you have accepted taking vacation time or rooming patient's they are going to continue to expect that. I think you have lay down what you will and won't tolerate. If you don't lay down the law, you will continue to be the one who "takes one for the team" and likely has your support taken away when the MD's staff is out. For me, this would be a dealbreaker if this expectation continued. Honestly, when we work short, the rooming staff all piggyback to room patients .

I’m in a catch. I need the loan repayment. I looked on HRSA website and there are no other HRSA jobs available IN MISSISSIPPI for an FNP. So, if I quit I’m screwed. I’m just really unhappy.

Can you relocate?

HRSA website is not the best source for jobs. Use general job search resources such as Indeed, LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter, etc. When you find an interesting job, then you can find out if they qualify for loan repayment.

You can also use the HPSA search website to search for facilities by county and state with high HPSA scores. Then go ahead and contact each one that qualifies - you never know when they might need someone.

FQHCs are a main source, but other nonprofits like nonprofit hospitals that run primary care facilities, Planned Parenthood, etc, should also qualify.

Government facilities such as the VA, county health, schools, etc., may also qualify.

So I’m not crazy or “to big for my pants?” This IS unreasonable, right?

No, you're not crazy. No, it's not unreasonable. You went into hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt (I'm assuming) so that you can do higher functioning healthcare, not to do the tasks that should be delegated to supporting staff.

It's insulting.

Thank you. I appreciate that. We did have a dentist. She quit crying after her dental assistant quit and they had her working alone. She said she was a danger to her patients trying to do both. Which was true. I have made calls and emails to other places for employment. No one is hiring (whose site score would allow me to keep my loan repayment). ☹️ It really sucks.

if it makes you feel better- sometimes the MA you work with isn't dependable...../lazy/ you have to overlook everything they do as you cannot trust them to carry out tasks....

I am not saying stay in your current position and be happy but hopefully it helps you have a bit of a glimmer of hope until you find something else
