Flu shot this year

Published

is anyone getting the new flu shot this year. its a combined seasonal flu plus H1N1 flu shot. some people arent getting it cause the H1N1 flu shot was kinda rush. im on the fence about it. I'm starting NS in a week and a half. how important is it to have a flu shot since we do spend a lot of time in the hospital?

i have no idea. i went to a link that crunchymama put up and it was talking about vaccine laws. one of the exceptions in florida is your religious beliefs. personally i dont really care. I think everyone has a right to do whatever they want with there body and at the same right the hospital should be able to say then you cant work etc here. As an American we are allowed to make choices. Again, i dont care i barely even read the article she posted. I just got my flu vaccine for the first time. I am not enjoying the side effects. I'm sensitive to everything so it comes as no surprise that i have the aches that some people can get with this vaccine. I just decided to get it bc im going to be doing clinicals and it seems like the smart thing to do.

I will say that you would be surprise what some religions prohibit. I remember in school there was a girl that couldnt say the pledge cause it was against her religion. Her parents wrote the school and told them. This was in 5th grade. You never know there are a lot of different religions and interpretations

Pardon my stupid question:o, but which religions prohibit vaccines?

i think amish/mennonites dont get vaccines..

also, most vaccines are made with chicken eggs, so i would think seventh day adventists or any vegans might decline them as well..

..as well as people with allergic rxns to eggs.

meh, I have a love/hate relationship with vaccines. For something like flu, which comes around with predictable regularity, and which can really mess with your life, I vote yes. For others, I do selective/delayed with my kids. I made the choice to get the Hep A/B series for school, and we all do the flu shots annually.

I totes respect not getting them at all, but I also see where the facility is coming from, not wanting employees who aren't at least minimally protected from highly contagious diseases. I imagine it's even more important on geri floors/facilities. TBS, I'm sure my ped would welcome unvaccinated employees, though. The nurses there ask, "So do you do vaccinations?" and don't have a snarky attitude at all when I say, "Sort of."

Don't worry, crunch, there's a job out there that won't nag you!

The last place I worked at required it. If you did not get the shot you had to wear a mask your entire shift for the entire flu season. I am extremely claustrophobic and pass out when I have to gown up for isolation patients (thank god we do not get too many on OB) and could never go an entire season let alone a shift wearing a mask over my face.
