Flu shot/husband-looking for advice, not to debate

Hi All,

I know this is a controversial subject but I'm not looking to stir up a debate. There are several threads on flu shots but I couldn't find one that quite addressed my concern, so I apologize in advance. I always try to look at vaccine debates objectively, and of course risk vs benefit.

I have always had flu shots without problems. My husband is 37 years old and has never had the flu, and has never had a flu shot. Interestingly he has never had a cold, (maybe once as a small child which he wouldn't remember). He flies 2x/per week for work, and still rarely ever gets sick. Every other time I fly, I get sick.

I am 17 weeks pregnant, first child, and I believe he should get the flu shot to protect me and our child when she arrives in March. I also believe he should get flu shots every year in the future because we will have young kid(s). He is not opposed to it, he is just asking hard but fair questions.

Why do I need it if I've never had the flu? I have a strong immune system (this is true) and it doesn't guarantee I won't get the flu, it only protects against a few strains. Yes, but it will minimize symptoms if you get a different strain. Also as we age our immune systems weaken. Is this enough though?

Of course he has good points, but I fear with Murphy's law he'll get the shot on my request and then also get the flu later this winter. I'm also nervous to introduce the flu shot to his system never having had it before. Any flu shot "experts" out there? I want to feel 100% comfortable asking him to do this :-) Of course, it's his decision, but he wants to do what's best for our family. Thanks!

Ok. Personally, I NEVER EVER miss my flu vaccinations and have not since the 80s. It's my experience, I have not had the flu in nearly 20 years. So yea, there is anecdotal information for you. My belief is I am not getting flu cause I am continually vaccinated. Heck yes I recommend he do it.

My son's pediatrician told my son I needed a flu shot to be around my two month old granddaughter. Yes, your husband should have the flu shot and also the boosters for DPT, and MMR if it's time.

You can always tell him that part of why the Spanish flu was so deadly was that it took advantage of the strong immune systems of young and middle adults. It is thought that they "over-reacted" to the virus and their immune system's excessively strong response is what did them in. Influenza Epidemic History: Why Was the Spanish Flu so Deadly? Obviously the current flu strains being vaccinated against aren't Spanish flu-pandemic type situations but hopefully you get my meaning that a strong immune system isn't anything to hide behind.

Also, they have to come out with a new vaccine to keep up with genetic drift which is why one flu shot does not cover a person for "life" (like other vaccines tend to be regarded as having lifelong immunity). So, there could be one out there with his name on it.

Finally, why aren't you getting the flu shot? I'm sure you've seen this already but: Pregnant? Get a Flu Shot!

PS

After he gets his first radical cold or flu from one of your kids (parents always tell me they've never gotten as sick as until they had children), maybe he'll change his mind.

Yes! I get a flu shot every year. Just had one Friday and it didn't hurt a bit and I feel fine.

Also became a grandparent for the first time 3 years ago and got my Tdap booster.

It is very important to help keep our kids healthy and safe.

A shot is no big deal in comparison to other things in life.

Get the flu shot and Tdap as well!

[COLOR=#000000]Oh man, this sounds exactly like the situation I had with myhusband before our third was born. I had not pushed it with him for the firsttwo but after the previous season when our older 2, who were vaccinated, butstill got the flu at the same time, I was adamant. He had never had it either.I printed him off a bunch of stories of parents who lost their newborn babiesfrom the flu, a bit cruel yes, but it worked. The third baby got RSV when hewas 4 months old, obviously nothing to prevent that, but after seeing the babyhooked up to O2 and being suctioned because he couldn't breathe, he nevercomplained about it getting it after that.
