Florida job market for new grads or returning nurses

Has the Florida job market improve for new grads? A year ago, There was tons of post on AN about new grads with no job prospects.

My friend with a new RN degree. He took a job @ SNF for $25, no benefits. Two of my friend's received a LPN job offer for $18 hr. One has day shift. The other works 3rd shift, 5 to 6 nights a week.

Aha! Moment!: I've learned that you can not be picky. Also, You have to pound the pavement.

Lots of jobs in Pensacola, FL. I was accepted after being out of hospital nursing for years. It's way north of Tampa though.

I am an RN here in Jacksonville...sad to say it but no hospital would hire me when I graduated, so I've spent the last year working in a nursing home.

After re-applying with my 1yr of experience, I still don't have the coveted hospital job.

I've been having a tough time getting a job also. How do you like working in a nursing home? How is the pay?

Well as always it depends on experience, but if you're new it can be anywhere between $19-20/hr. It really all depends on how many beds the facility has because some have 120+ but others have far less.

I'm sure I could make more if I go to a diff. nursing home, but as an Rn, I really don't see much point since it'll be the same ridiculous patient ratios somewhere else.

If I could even get an interview with a hospital, that at least would be something, but I can't even get that far. Good luck to you though.

I'm also curious about jobs/wages in Florida, specifically the Pensacola area. I've been traveling for the last year, but want to settle down closer to home (Louisiana). Psych is my specialty. Any ideas?

I am not too sure what the job market is like in Pensacola for psych,but I am in the Port Charlotte area and their is nothing...Psychiatric care is limited here unless you are into Nursing Home with elderly alzheimers/dementia.We relocated here last year due to my husbands job,beautiful area but no jobs for me.I have been looking for 4 months now,sent out multiple applications from Naples to Bradenton(I have 20+ yrs exp) and I'm not even getting a phone call.It is very frustrating,maybe Pensacola is better....good luck:)

Don't know about psych in Pensacola, but the hospitals are paying $25-$30/hr base pay for PRN (no benefits). Shift differential is added onto that. Not sure what benefitted nurses are making.

All of us that took the NCLEX between Feb and March has gotten hired. From the stories I've heard (Including mine) it wasn't an easy task. It took about a hundred applications and harrassing the heck out of HR and/or Nurse Managers from floor to floor but we did it. We are all hired (even in places that said that they weren't hiring new grads). South Florida.

IMO, I believe you have to put a face to place..

Thank you. We graduated from a 4yr University BSN program in South Florida. Most of us got hired in very good hospitals within the Dade and Broward County areas. Yeah, you have a be a kind of a pest and crash a few jobfairs if you can (even those that said "looking for experienced nurses", that helped a couple of us out). Volunteering is another good option but do it right away if you can because it takes about 2 weeks to process your information (background check and physical). Just try to do whatever you can to get out of the system. Remember there are thousands of applicants sending in applications online every day so do your best to get your name and face out of their computers. Best wishes!!
