Florida Hospital Graduate Nurse Program July/August 2015

Published

Hello Everyone!

I am going to be graduating with my ADN in May and am planning to relocate back to Central Florida from Southeast Missouri (I moved here in 2007 with family and I'm very much looking forward to this move!). I applied for the July/August 2015 Graduate Nurse Program and selected my preferential locations as Orlando and Altamonte in PCU, Med/Surg Tele, and ED. I am hoping to move as soon as possible after graduation, dependent on getting a job. I am a single mother to a one year old and cannot go if we don't have a stable situation yet.

I guess what I'm wondering is:

What are my chances?

What advice do you have for me?

Did anyone have a similar situation and get hired on?

My application was submitted yesterday evening and this morning it said "Under Initial Review". I am 22 and have had 4+ years experience in Nursing as a CNA, the last year being spent with a Community Health Systems Hospital. I mentioned that I would immediately be pursuing my BSN this summer and also that my mom worked there as an RN before we moved and how she had many good things to say about FH.

Thanks in advance! I am banking on getting this opportunity and am not sure where I will go work wise if I don't get a position with FH. Haven't heard many good things with Orlando Health?

RNbyGrace7: have you had an interview yet?

No I have it next week. But it doesn't say what floor. Just Multisystem PCU. I toured 2nd floor and 3N with a staff member and none of the managers had record of me. One of them set her own interview with me via HR. I'm slightly confused. Do they have MSPCU in the Gensburg tower? What floor are you hired on? Also I'm awaiting my ATT. Got approved Monday.

Hi Bogey123, how is your GN orientation going? Do new grads get paid every 2 weeks during the training program or you get paid full after training?

Thank you.

Hi NYtoFLRN, BSN, RN, how is your GN program going? or how is your orientation going? answers will be appreciated. Thank you.

Hey, just curious did you attend the hiring events they was having?

Hey! Yes I attended the hiring event. I started getting nervous when I saw people just in and out with HR but they ended up taking me up for an interview on 3rd for Med/Surg and called me three days later to offer me the job! I was so glad I went!

I don't think anyone starts until August. I'm Med/Surg and start August 10th.

Congratulations! Which campus are you going to be at?

Bogey,

I was going to apply for the residency myself. I just finished my ADN and have no experience at all aside from clinicals. I worked at Brookdale Senior Living in the dining area but no actual patient care. I wasn't sure if being a man would hurt my chances when I applied.

Did your GPA come up during the interview? Mine is less a 3.0 and I was worried about that since they ask for it on the application. And what did you mean about companies that would do your licensure in time? Thanks for the help!

Blue,

I'm not a man so I cannot help you there but my GPA from my ADN was also less than a 3.0 and they never brought it up to me. But I ended up going to a hiring event and that's when they interviewed me even though I was still under consideration online. And he used a licensing company in Florida that just ensures everything is done quickly to get you your Florida License when you are relocating from another state. If you are testing or have tested in Florida, there's not any need to worry about that. Otherwise, the company he recommended was awesome!

Being a male nurse will help more than hurt. I'm a guy and the nurses here seem to appreciate that due to lifting, violent people ect.

im in my 3rd week of the residency and I enjoy it. I am able to rotate through 6 different floors and I get matched after week 5.

There are many new nurses in this program that have no background in healthcare besides clinical. As for GPA, I am unsure how much that is looked at. I can tell you that specialty areas such as ER and ICU do look at my GPA when i give them my resume during my rotations. I got all 4.0s in nursing school. I only have an ADN but have been passing medications for 7 years in LTC facilities.

This hospital was actually ranked very poorly nationally in several categories just last year, but it is improving ALOT. Like bottom 10th percentile to 75th percentile. The culture is changing.

If you are from out of state, like me, I would apply to other hospital systems as well. Tampa General and the baycare network are nice hospitals I wish I would have applied to. But I am happy here as I will be able to work on speciality floors as a new nurse, which probably isn't an option at other facilities.

Thanks for the answers Bogey123. I applied this week and my application was updated yesterday to say it's under initial review. I started my Role Transformation class and as soon as that ends I'll have my ATT. I already paid the license fee to the Florida BON and getting fingerprinted today. Hopefully this doesn't hurt my chances. I applied for the October/December program.

I was sent a behavioral assessment on Monday and I completed it the next day. My application says it was updated today and shows under initial review. Is this a good sign? I haven't had any emails since they sent me the link to the assessment. Thanks for the help!

Hi!! As long as your application says under initial review, you are good! I just went through the process myself and got offered a position in the Hepatology MSPCU at the Orlando Campus on Tuesday!! Don't despair @blue10145, ADN, they take a little while, but once that ball starts rolling it goes by quickly!!
