with regards to union fees

i pay £10-£13 per month with equates to about $20 dollars max

as a student i paid that for a whole year

part of my fees cover insurance incase someone wishes to sue me

i dont think thats bad value for money really

certainly not looting.

Nope, not bad at all. You can expect to pay a bit more if you cross the Atlantic. This is from the UC/CNA application. I don't know all the benefits they provide for these fees. source

"Under this formula, if you are paid more than an average of twelve (12) hours per week, your monthly dues are equal to 2.2 times your base hourly wage, up to a monthly maximum of $84.15. If you are paid for an average of twelve (12) or fewer hours per week, your monthly dues rate is $42.08."

" the last part of the formula states " The monthly maximum dues will be adjusted each July based upon the average wage increases paid to nurses under the KAISER PERMANENTE,UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA,AND CATHOLIC HEALTHCARE WEST contracts

rev.12-2-05 ;) ;)

Oh yes, thanks. ;) So next month these rates could go up, go down, or stay the same. Anyone willing to lay any bets? :chuckle

Maximum dues could go up IF the nurses at Kaiser, UC, and CHW average sinifican pay increases.

MY dues only go up when my pay goes up.

I for one love left wing politics and can't stand right wing boneheads.

And along those lines - are there any facilities in Arizona with a strong union? I know that is an oxymoron in the case of Arizona - strong union - where all the firefighters seem to have their act together with regard to labor unity. But are there any reasonably active nursing unions - particularly in the metro Phoenix area?

We may "need" a state union soon. The administrations and politicians are spreading the myth of a nursing shortage. The "myth" is used to justify short staffing and import large quantities of foreign nurses. By importing a large amount of foreign nurses we will lower nurse wages and import enough RN's to relieve this state of LPN's.

There is nothing wrong with doing a good job and being paid well.

On a worse thought, I would not doubt that if the bird flu is real, it will bail out medicare, social security and "the nursing shortage" in short time.

I agree totally, Ion!

AZ is a right to work state. Even if the union is voted in, membership is voluntary- the nurses could join or not -their choice.

I would personally love to join a nurses' union. I'd be ecstatic to have the opportunity.

Traveling Nurse - that is the drawback of AZ, a right to work state. On the other hand, you don't have to scrape ice off of your windshield on a cold winter's morning (at least in metro Phoenix). So that is the tradeoff - weather versus workers rights. I just stick a little extra into my 401k knowing I will have no pension, hope for the best, and enjoy the sunshine. I'd personally love a union, too...but living here is a choice I gladly/voluntarily made, and I will have to make the best of all it entails.

What benefits do you get for your dues? Apparently in the UK is covered. Do US unions do that as well? Do they have a strike fund to makeup wages lost during strikes? Just curious where the money goes. THanks.

The main benefit is the contract. My manager agrees that it is easier to have the rules in writing.

We have the nursing process and staffing ratios in the contract too.

We get a discount on the already reasonable . (It is much more for Certified Nurse Midwives)

Free continuing educations classes given by CNA. Contracts have paid education leave.

Strikes are usually for only one day. Hospitals sometimes lock out nurses for four. Nurses can work registry if they need the money. I think there is a fund for those who really suffer financially.

My pay has more than doubled since our first contract, not so many years ago. I went from LVN to RN between shortages so even with only about ten years RN experience newer RNs who hadn't worked here nearly as long were paid more because they were hired during the late eighties shortage. Their pay increased while mine increased way more.

Kind of made sense as I was orienting them and taking charge while they were paid more.

Discount car rental and other discounts I don't use are included.

AND discounts at an on line book store! That I use!

I think the best part is the opportunity to work together with other nurses for better patient care and help the profession. Ratios, no floating unless competent, the whistleblower law, nurse title protection, restrictions on unlicensed assistive personnel, and the right as well as the responsibility to advocate for patients in our Practice Act have made it better for all acute care patients and nurses in California.

Arizona nurses recently got the first ratios of 2 or fewer patients per nurse in ICU. That is a great start.

"boneheads"?

Let us insult each other and complain about how nurses can not pull together.

I hear people from the so called "right" and "left" in the media who probably deserve such insults. Especially talk radio and cable TV "news" and "stars" in entertainment who regularly insult others.

BUT fellow nurses by virtue of the work we do want to provide safe, effective, and therapeutic care.

When our governor, whose background was in bodybuilding and show business, tried to eliminate the board of nursing, stop the implementation of safer staffing for med-surg, and eliminate all staffing and record keeping requirements for emergency departments nurses of all political opinion took the the streets and the capital to expose his harmful executive order.
