FIU/Barry/UM

Published

Hey everyone,

i'm an aspiring CRNA and wanted to get a little insight on my chances of getting into 1 of the 3 listed schools, as well as some thoughts/info on each program.

Well, i'll be applying for Fall 2009 at UM/FIU and Springs 2010 at Barry. I graduated from FAU with my BSN (Magna Cum Laude with 3.85 GPA). Started in CVICU as a new grad and will have 2 years of CV experience by the time the program starts. Just took my GRE and got a 430 verbal, 740 quantitative, for a combined of 1170.

what do you all think? good chances? If you are currently enrolled in one of these programs, how did these stats compare to yours (if you don't mind posting; i'd really appreciate it ;) Should i retake my GRE to get my verbal above 500?? do the schools even require a verbal >500??

Also, how do you like these programs and what do you like about them?

Thanx for your help ahead of time. -Anthony

I think your GRE is fine. I wouldn't retake it. I think your chances are very good. I know people in FIU and UM's programs with lower GPA and GRE's. Get good letters of reccomendation. Shadow a CRNA (this is pretty much required anymore). Consider CCRN and any other certifications you can get. And sell yourself at your interview. All 3 programs have pluses and minuses. Figure out which fits you best and hopefully you will have an option among all 3.

Good luck on your quest

Your stats so far are good, I'd just get all the experience you can. I'd also add CCRN to your resume, and take organic chemistry and you should not have any problem getting accepted. Good luck!

Your stats look great, like previously said unless you are strong in chemistry I would refresh the organic version...and being in Barry's program it will be especially helpful.

Get all the experience you can and get CCRN.

Good Luck.

is the CCRN something that will take extensive studying? i imagine it to be like the boards, only critical care focused.

Take CCRN. Yes, it takes some study time and some effort. You seem motivated, so get motivated and do this. With quality CTICU experience you should have no problems considering a good chunk of the test is hemodynamics. I used Laura Gasparis Vonfrolio's CCRN DVD (it is for sell on her website).

Looking at your stats alone you look like a great candidate. I was accepted to UM with pretty much every stat lower than yours, but I performed well at the interview. I also did not have organic, so I don't think it is vital to acceptance.

Let us know how you do. I am curious as I too plan on applying to all 3 when I finish my BSN...and work for a bit of course.

Well i'm also currently working on my BSN and plan on applying to all 3 universities. What else would you guys recommend for an undergrad student?

So far:

a good gpa

a good score on the GRE

good recommendation letters

CCRN

ICU experience

anything else??????
