I think some of the major hospitals in the DC/MD/VA area only hire new RN's in cohorts, so they can train groups of new RN's at the same time. Usually, you have to pass the NCLEX before you can be hired.

Both WHC and GW I'm told post positions for new grad nurses during the spring, for summer hiring as a group. At GW I think the positions are for "nursing internships" or something like that. At WHC I think you attend something called Dream Day. The terminology is a bit weird, but it just means a new RN with less than one year of experience.

At Georgetown Univ Hosp, I had to apply online last November, got called back and invited in December, submitted my written application/references/resume last week, and will go to New Grad Day in February (GUH starts earlier than others). If they like me, I'll get an offer in May, starting in July, conditional on having first passed the NCLEX. And I will have to make a 2 year fulltime commitment to work in the unit where I'm hired.

Just spreading some hope for new GN's. I just moved to this area, knew no one, and have an ADN (which in the north east is a disadvantage) and had 3 interviews. I was offered all three jobs. My advice, for what it's worth- Persistance is key. I called every Monday and put out over 60 applications. I google mapped every hospital in Rhode Island applied to every job I was minimally qualified for, and it paid off. I was offered a Graduate Nurse Internship position at a hospital that is less than 5 mins from my house! So keep plugging! Jobs are out there, you just really have to get in HRs face sometimes. And for those that are doing that, keep doing it! Your day will come! Keep positive!

I thought a GN/RN could work as an LPN if necessary? (the DON at my nursing school told us that if we did not pass the NCLEX the first time, we could work as an LPN until we were able to pass it, maybe he was wrong?)

I applied to that around the 23rd of Nov. and didn't get a call or anything :( Guess that ship has sailed

You can not work as an LPN when you are not licensed as one. I've never heard that.

People post about doing that on AN all the time. I imagine it varies by state whether you can work "below" your license.

But it wouldn't be "below your license" a Graduate Nurse does not yet have a license until they pass NCLEX. So without any license I highly doubt you could work as a LPN. You could work as a Patient Care Tech or CNA.

He told you wrong if you live in Virginia. You can practice on your RNA for 90 days from date of graduation, yet you only get to start working once you've registered with the VA board of nursing to get your letter. If you fail it, that's it until you pass your boards. LPN is something completely different.

A lot of facilities (here in WI) don't like to employ RN graduates as CNA. They're afraid you would work above your position, which is bad for liability/insurance, something like that. My friends who worked at a hospital as CNAs had to quit within 3 months of graduating for that reason.

P.S. I graduated in May '10 (been searching since Jan '10). Found a job (yay) in inpt psych, but found psych really isn't a good fit for me. Now I'm back to job searching.

Finding a job in the DC area is tough! They do prefer BSN over ADN's here. I have 15 years experience as a hospital LPN and that does not even matter. I have been licensed since the end of July and will be working my first job(health fair) as an RN next week. I have a LPN license and had trouble even getting LPN jobs. I had 5 interviews in 6 months and finally think I have a job(scared to admit because I am scared to lose it). Good luck to all those new nurses out there.
