what is the secret of passing the first time--how did you study--how long--did you take a specific prep course?

I did as many questions as possible and when I would miss one I would write it in a notebook and study it. Really increases your knowledge and confidence. Saunders is a great book and using Suzannes plan would be my suggestion, but I mostly did the CD questions and wrote out the rationales of the ones I missed. My wife on the other hand bought the Mosby's note cards and that is all she studied and we both passed.
Was it as horrible as everyone is posting?

I didn't think they were that bad. Challenging yes but doable. I took both the LPN and RN within 3 weeks of graduating because I have read that the sooner you test the better chances of passing. I studied about 2 hours each day. I did the chapter quizes in the book and any that I didn't score above 70% I read the chapter and practiced questions on the CD. Since I had used my Saunders book as a study guide all through school the 3 weeks was enough for my LPN and with my RN I ended up studying Saunders for 2 weeks and then added the ncsbn site with their questions for the third week. I passed both the first time with the minimum number of questions.
Good luck!
I did not think it was as hard as the HESI's I took in school. IF you know your material and read the questions slowly and understand what they are asking you will do fine. Just know your material:)....because they can ask you anything. I definetly thought it to be easier to pick the correct answer out the 2 answers you usually narrow down to.

i have to agree with Jules A the sooner you take the test the better because everything is still fresh in ur mind. I thought the nclex was easy, easier than the exams i took in school, i did kaplan the 8 days setion in 2 weeks ( waist of time/money) after that i continued doing the question trainers, and a few days befor the nclex i did not study. some times is good to give the brain a rest. On the nclex i have 2 or 3 SATA, 1 med calc ( that question was really difficult) and the rest easy questions.
One thing i do think help us ( all my classmates 25 of us have pass the nclex so far) is how difficult our in class exams were in class.
May I ask what school you go to?
