First Time In

hello to all. i'm looking for suggestions and advice.(as much as i can get). this is my first week into my prereqs. i just wanted some ideas on what electives to take and anything extra that could help me get into a nursing program. i have a slight problem i'm scared of blood and other icky things. i know nursing might not be the best field for me but my passion is helping people. i'm willing to get over my fears and take it one step at a time and prove to myself that i can do anything. thanks for accepting me.

Welcome to AllNurses!!! :balloons: I am moving your post to this forum, to help give better exposure. My advice would be to seek out the admissions counselor for your school's nursing program as to the best strategy to get a seat in the program. Each and every nursing program is different. As for the blood thing - well, the first time a phlebotomist drew blood from me (years and years ago), I passed out :imbar I couldn't even think of blood without getting queasy. But here I am today. Yesterday, for instance, I helped two or three of my students draw labs, put in IVs and hang blood :chuckle

VickyRN, did I draw blood on you? lol My first stick on my extern fainted, but it wasn't my first time to do a venipuncture.

Anyway, as far as the OP goes....I do agree with VickyRN, seek the help of an advisor at your school.

Also, you have to find out what nursing program you want to go to, or get course lists from several in your area. Decide what electives those schools have in common, and do those electives first.

As far as pre-reqs, depending on how many classes you are going to take at one time, and how long it will be before you apply, watch out for the 5 year rule for sciences that most schools have.

Your best resource is your advisor at your school. If you wish you can post exactly what classes you are taking and/or plan to take. Basically a run-sown on your course outline so that some of us can give so some feedback. :)
