First Semester Students, How's it going so far?

Published

Hello! Where are all my pre nursing students that made it to this side? Yayyy us!:yeah:

Well the acceptance celebration is long over for me. Had my first nursing fundamentals test today. I woke up feeling so anxious. Only slept 4.5 hours last night. I felt like I read more in one week than I did all of last semester doing my last pre-req:eek:. ZOMG, I was sooo nervous. I managed to calm myself down though, and I did really well on the exam. However, I'm still a bundle of nerves for my first skills checkoff next week. Still having trouble with blood pressure, but I'm practicing every day to get the hang of it. I just feel like I hear so much better with my own steth in comparison to the ones at school that we have to use for checkoffs.

So anyone else start yet? How's it going?

I'm in week 3 of my 1st semeseter and our first tests are next Thursday (Math/CNA stuff) and Friday (Theory & Topics). Not nervouse yet, not sure if I should be; the stuff we're doing right now is not difficult (history of nursing/legal/nursing process) stuff I familiarized myself with by coming on the forum so much (Yay!) So, we'll see how it all goes...hopefully my test scores are the same as my confidence.

Im first semster but we are in Pharm right now and do not even start Fundamentals until March. So far we have had 2 exams and I did a 92% on the first one, dont know the second one yet.

I'm in my 2nd week of an ADN program and feel like I am having a nervous breakdown! I have lecture and 2 lab classes. I passed my 1st 2 quizzes, but the work is overwhelming. I love it!!

The scenarios on Friday are not for first semester students, I asked my instructor Mrs.C and she said it would be more appropriate for the second semester students.

I don't think there is anything to prevent you from watching how they run the scenarios to get more information about how to think and nursing process.

Can I ask you how you focus on what to study for the exam? like for an example, in the lecture outcome, we are learning physical assessment, I know we would need to know what assessment we do for each body part and the orders in which we do them, but is she going to test us on anatomy stuff? like structure and what it does?

I am not quite sure what to focus on.

You'll need to know A&P to answer some questions but you won't get an A&P question. You're going forward from everything you've learned, no going backward for review. Are you in a study group?

Ok, how do I sign up? I really thought I failed the test because many of my classmates did much better than I did. I notice I tend to choose the wrong answer when it comes to scenario question, where it's not something you can just study off the lecture notes or book. For example, not sure how the words were worded, but it was something like you take a BP for a patient, it was 97F, and after meal you measured it again, it was 101, would you a. document that, B. check the machine and make sure the probe is correctly placed under the tongue, C. call the doctor..... how do you rationalize something like this?

No, I am not really in a study group. I tried that for the first exam, it went bad. We just sat in skill lab and doing our own thing and not really testing each other. Sometimes we even carry on a conversation that did not relate to nursing. so no, It wasn't working for me!

Oh, and I got a B on a test. LOL! I think some questions I was not too sure about and did go back and forth and that really just showed how unprepared I was. It's stressing me out and I am not sure if my studying technique is wrong or not. =(

Wow! I can't believe the semester is almost over!! We have 3 more weeks to go before final exam and ATI exit. Did my last skills checkoff today. Foley. Thank goodness I was successful on the first attempt so I can focus on the last exam next week and final the following week. What a roller coaster ride this has been! Exams, I've done well. The last 2 not as great as the earlier ones but they were still Bs so thats good. I've been more nervous about skills than written exams. A couple of folks have failed out after not passing their skills so I kinda made that my main focus over written exams. But I had to smile today after I did my Foley checkoff. I know I'll be nervous the first time I have to do this on a real patient but I've learned so much since January. I'm passing meds and giving injections in clinicals and I'm really comfortable with talking to my patients now and getting my assessments done.

What a far cry from that first day when I was shaking like a leaf!

So lets hear it first semester students, as the semester is winding down. How's it going?

Just took my last regular test before Finals. Got an 88. I am so tired of making 88's on my exams! It is ridiculous how many 88s I have earned, and it's a little depressing, because I might as well get a 79.5, as either grade will reflect as a B on my transcript. An 88 has been my lowest grade in any of my classes.

I know I should be glad I passed, as that seems to be the mentality of many of my classmates, but I guess I have different standards for myself. Not used to being a B student. ///Whiny rant over

I'm just glad the semester is coming to an end. Really enjoyed clinicals and it re-affirmed my desire to be a nurse, but I am ready for a break!

All done and on my mini vacation. Semester 2 starts first week in May in the hospital versus the classroom. Ready for med surg and mental health.

Im doing well in all my classes. I may scrape by with 3 As and 1 B if all goes well. Im worried/not worried bout my health assessment check offs. I dont think itll be too difficult but i may be underestimating it :o
