First RN job & it's pay

Published

Hello everyone,

I would like as many responses as possible. I am located in Houston, Texas but looking to working to work anywhere in the US. I am about to get my RN license and I have started looking for a job. What should I expect my salaray or my wage/hr at my first job as a RN with no experience? If people would tell me their personal pay they received at there first job would be helpful. I've researched the web and found just a scattered range of pays. Your responses will be very appreciated. Thanks!

My WI hospital pays $22/hr across the board for all new grads (plus shift differential/weekend program differential/no benefit differential/etc). I make $25 with my shift differential.

Same here in IA. Although I could drive 40 miles to MN and make almost $40/hr ...

Someone mentioned about California, from what I've heard (and correct me if I'm wrong) although everyone sits for the National exam, California has a much higher standard for passing (ie they require a higher score then other states). I've hard from faculty that getting a license in California makes it easier to get one in another state without the worry of having to sit for the exam.

Not true. The exam is the exam and passing is passing, across all 50 states.

Just an update of sorts...As a new May 2013 grad in San Antonio, TX, I can say that the larger hospitals are starting new grads at $21 to $23 and hour. There is one that is starting at $19 per hour until you finish the 4 month residency program then you go to $21.50 per hour. I shopped around and have found that the smaller hospitals and specialty facilities will start you out with higher pay. I chose one of those and started at $27 per hour plus $4 dollars night differential and its plus $6 on Sat and Sun nights. (I work 7p-7A). If you don't mind not being in the largest hospital then you can find better starting pay.

I'm in southeast Florida and just got my first job (postpartum). I make $23/hr plus $4 differential for nights and $3.50 more for weekends.

33.78/hr plus a $4.00 differential in So Cal. Pretty good. :)

Yes, the NCLEX is the same across all states. It's a national exam. No difference in the test questions or standards of passing. California is just pickier when it comes to allowing other nurses come in from different states to work at with a california facility.

I am from Minnesota. I am a new grad nurse work at a local hospital. Pay started off at 28.95 an hour. With pay differential on weekends and night shifts. This area has very low cost of living too.
