  1. This is a good topic. I also graduated recently with a BSN. I approached it from a different perspective though and it may only apply in my area (TX). I was accepted into a Versant Residency program that is 4+ months long. I was also excepted into a regular entry level position that includes an 8 week precept period. Both are in the same specialty by the way. The residency paid $21.50 per hour. The entry level position paid $27 per hour. Most residency programs in my area don't pay well I don't know your situation but I took that into consideration.
  2. Just an update of sorts...As a new May 2013 grad in San Antonio, TX, I can say that the larger hospitals are starting new grads at $21 to $23 and hour. There is one that is starting at $19 per hour until you finish the 4 month residency program then you go to $21.50 per hour. I shopped around and have found that the smaller hospitals and specialty facilities will start you out with higher pay. I chose one of those and started at $27 per hour plus $4 dollars night differential and its plus $6 on Sat and Sun nights. (I work 7p-7A). If you don't mind not being in the largest hospital then you can find better starting pay.
  3. I am currently enrolled in the UIW nusing program. UIW IS a Yellow Ribbon school. The program is competitive to get into and there are only around 40 slots per cycle. They don't have more prerequisites than UTHSC just different ones than public schools. Very good nursing program in my opinion. Smaller classes with lots of personal attention. Be aware the program is 5 semesters instead of the 4 semesters at UTHSC that is a drawback for some. GPA was important but HESI test scores are VERY important! The better choice is the one you are more comfortable with since both nursing programs are highly regarded.
