First day of nursing School *unleashed* post yours

Published

Well, I would like to share my first day of nursing school experience.

It all started last night when i could not go to sleep, then I woke up at 4 am, because I was so excited and anxiety had taken over! Well I got up, took a shower, took care of the dogs, and even ironed my uniform.

I ended up leaving home at 6 am, for the 1 hour commute, since I was afraid that I would be caught in the middle of traffic.

I ended up at school at 7 am, I sat in my car, had my coffee, and at 730 people started showing up. Well I found out that classes would not start until 9 on the first day, since they had people lost on the buildings, trying to find the classrooms, teachers coming back gathering loads of stuff, from a side to another, and finally classes started. It was funny to see all my peeps from pre-reqs there in addition to some other new faces!

It all started by our Pharmacology teacher (we have pharm all day long on Mondays) asking us to write a paragraph on:

- Why nursing?

- Semester goal

- 3 year goal

After we wrote that, she made us one by one, read it to the class, as an introduction! Well, I heard maybe half of the people with the CRNA goal, the other half with money/or NP goal, LOL hopefully they'll get there!

Then she started the syllabus, in which:

  • 50% are tests
  • 10% presentation
  • 10% group work, participation
  • 5% post test
  • 25% finals.

Which is not bad. My first impression is that Our teacher is a nice Lady, she has been a NP for 12 years, and on still works 2 days a week on her private practice, which I thought was a plus, since she is updated on things.

Well, then lecture started, and we went over the nursing process, and then the 7 rights, and then we covered chapters 1 and 2 of the book (keep in mind 5 hour lecture LOL) the funny thing is: We have to know chapters 1-9 by next Monday!!! For our first test, she will give us multiple choices only, and will allow us to use a 4X6 flashcard, where we can write stuff on one side, and hand it to her, then she will return it to us on the first test day, keep in mind that we have 5 tests. OMG that is a lot of info, even though I had answered the questions already on the study guide...

She is really nice to us, always asking if it is all clear, anymore questions! I like her I guess! (Although you know... some people on the break room already started venting... blah)

Then she was telling us that we will have clinicals starting on the end of the month, so we can learn how to talk to our patients, practice some basic skills. (For the first 3 weeks we have Thursday and Fridays just for skills!!! 10 hours a week!).

She said that we will not do any invasive skill on ourselves, meaning no drawing each others blood, or giving any sort of injection. How the hell am I going to learn??? How did you guys learn this??? It makes me wonder, since I have no previous experience with that other than a few lovenox abdominal shots.

She said that in May we will start giving IM, IV, Sq, and all that good stuff. (But then again with no previous human attempts! She said that if we were to do it among ourselves, somewhere else... Whatever! But not in class!)

So it was exciting today, lots of information, and homework! Can't wait for tomorrow (but I am ok, anxiety level is down now).

We have fundamentals ALLLLLL day tomorrow, starting at 8-2pm

So, bottom line, so far I am very happy with everything, the nursing staff seems amazing so far (have dealt with them since pre-reqs) and all my classmates are cool (of course, there is the sleepy one, the parrot one, the repetitive one, the fancy girls, the CNA knows it all's, but they are ok so far!)

Comments are welcome!

Those who start(started) soon please post your experience here! Lets make this thread last all the way through our graduation!!!

eep! this thread is so inspiring. It gets me super excited about my first day! I start on August 30th! I have yet to get started on my reading but after reading this thread, I'm going to hop on that! Thanks for posting everyone! I'll get to post my own First Day story soon :)

hey annie! i start august 30th as well....if you don't mind me asking, what school will you be attending?

Specializes in Intensive Care.

Hi Samantha! I actually go to an ADN program in Maryland :)

ooh bummer. I'm in New Hampshire! it was worth the shot.. haha

Well...if orientation counts, then my first day was today.

It was long (8-4), and a lot of information was thrown at us!

The major things I remember though are:

- In order to pass, we need to have a 75% average overall, AND in tests alone

- Our ID cards are our keys and losing them is detrimental

- My nursing professor for theory is nuts

- There's some online IT course we're required to take

- We get mailboxes and lockers

- There's a huge fridge in the commuter lounge

- We'll get into the hospital in just a couple of weeks

- Clinicals start at the end of September

- I will love my life on Fridays (no class and no clinicals)

- My planner will become my life

- The faculty and staff always have open doors

There was so much more that was covered...but it was just too much to retain...especially since I was tired because I got up at 7 this morning after being wide awake til sometime after midnight despite being in bed long before then, and all summer, 8/8:30 was early for me!

I will be starting school August 30th as well...I feel like im ready yet slightly worried but I think I can pull through. In my freshman year of college while taking my pre-reqs i heard so many rumors of how many people dropped classes before the semester was over and how many people passed. But I do realize that there are people who will say things just to scare everyone away but overall im confident, I know what I want and I know that I can do this!!!! I just need to layout a schedule as to what to do, what will be due for classes, when to study and when my next tests are to come. This year i'm giving it my all!!!! If any of you reading this thread have any advice or different ways to study please, please, please, share it with those of us who are just starting. Thanks!!

I start August 23rd. Wow, I read that some of you have to have a 75 to pass. That's failing at our school =( We can't have below an 80.

I'm the only one that got the A.

Everyone else in the class flunked.

I'm the smartest in the class.

Everyone else is dumb.

Out of all the posts that are in this thread, the above 4 statements summarized what has been posted over and over.

Nothing bad ever happens to the person who posts, it's alwaysa someone else in class, someone else in the clinical group. Sure hope you guys take on the role of personal responsibility for caring for your patients. "Oh, it's not my fault my patient got sick, it's the nurse three floors below us that did this."

Tyler, what do you mean by " the above 4 statements?" I just logged on and haven't read all 25 pages of what everyone had to say. I was simply telling the standards at my school.

SingDanceRunLife-

It almost seems like we attend the same school but I know that we dont. Our school issues mailboxes and lockers to everyone as well.

We had a 3 day orientation. On the 17th, we had orientation from 9 until 4. On the 18th, we had a boatride that the majority of the school attended. It was actually really nice. We got to mingle with all of the instructors, our advisors, and get to know our classmates, as well as get tips and pointers from the students who will be graduating this coming year. They also gave out prizes and things like that, I won a $25 Visa gift card and a T-Shirt (Yay me! lol). And today was the last day of orientation for us and it lasted from 8:30 until 3. We received our parking passes, ID's that we must wear when we're at clinicals/events that represent the school, and we got our badges that let us into the hospital after hours. I seriously almost feel like a real nurse. Our program is hospital based, thats why we get badges with access to the hospital at all hours, but of course we dont get that same kind of treatment at the other hospitals we'll be at.

Our first day is Monday and Im super nervous. And clinicals actually start the first week for us. The first day will just be orientation at the hospital along with policies, etc. We dont actually get patient assignments though until about the 6th week. I'll be back on Monday to share my experience.

I start Sept 13th. We start clinicals the third week of class.

Does anyone else spend the first semester clinicals in a nursing home?

Specializes in None.
