EEk!
Ok so yesterday was my first day back from maternity leave. I went in monday spoke with manager about a few random things and had some loose ends tied up before returning. I emptied my mailbox then. Today I go and check my mailbox and there was used narcotics in there! A few containers that had about half the dilaudid gone as well as a bunch of other random things.
Odd huh? thankfully i found them before someone else found them in my box.

I cannot even tell you how p*ssed off I would be if I found this!! What happened after you found them? What did your super say?
We handed them over to supervisor and security is no involved and they will be looking into it. They are also removing all of the mailboxes and putting in locked boxes that will now be checked by security randomly on a monthly basis. I left out some details in case anyone from my floor visits here and can figure this out... but there was some other things with the narcotics so they will be watching everyone.
I'm not mad about finding it I just hope it wasn't the case of someone diverting. I'm more concerned about that. Hopefully it was just the case of someone forgetting to waste and ending up in my box.

Good thing YOU reported it before it was discovered by someone else!

glad they took the appropriate action by putting in locked mailboxes

I just can't see someone "forgetting" to properly waste and dispose of narcs. Possibly trying to get rid of stuff in a hurry and shoving it into a mailbox IS something I can see.

I don't see how this could be anything other than diverting. I mean....how close are your mailboxes to your waste container? Ours are about 4 rooms and 200 feet apart. If anything ended up anywhere near the mailboxes, let alone placed in one, it would have to be a diversion.
How fortunate that you found it first, and told everyone immediately! Hopefully you'll save a coworker from themselves...and your other coworkers from becoming a victim.

This is really bad, but going to the MAR's and finding which pt's have been receiving these medications and who wittiness the waste seems like a place to start. That and everyone gets to go to lab and pee in cup! Is pharmacy and administration involved ? Also in our state BON would be there and some one would end up arrested for diverting narc's.

I understand security and administration is involved. I'd make a call to the BON but be sure you have your proof of not being at work ready.

I don't want to seem like an alarmist but do you have any enemies at your work? Sounds like someone was trying to set you up to get fired or something.
