Finished my MSN this morning - ask me anything!

Nursing Students Western Governors

Updated:   Published

I completed the final oral defense for my MSN through this morning. I also have my BSN from WGU.

Completed RN-to-BSN in one, six month term, and the MSN in 11 months and five days (not that I'm counting!)

Two degrees for under $10K out of pocket, including books. (I received a total of $2K in scholarships)

So----- I'm going to put myself out there and if you would like info about either program from a recent grad -hit me up!

I wonder if my education would be as good as another school if I finish it so Fast. Fast sounds good and financially wise but I also want a great education not just the letters after my name. It’s hard to decide.

Some people move faster than others because they can prove competence faster than others. I think people make the mistake in thinking since you are able to move through it quickly that the program is easy; it is not. More time does not equal a better education. Why sit through a class you may already know just to prove you know it? allows you to move on once you PROVE you know the material.

After completing my BSN and MSN through WGU, I went on to complete my DNP and am now enrolled in an FNP program. If anything, WGU has so much writing and self leaning that I think it prepared me more than most traditional programs would have.

The responses from others regarding your comment/concern are spot on. I just wanted to echo that the competency based platform helps to hone in on areas Where there are gaps in knowledge while moving quickly through areas of competency. I felt I got a great deal out of my BSN degree from even though I moved through it quickly. It maximized my time and was a very efficient way to learn in my opinion. Like others have said, the assessments and assignments weren’t easy in respect to showing competency. It is common to have assignments sent back for revisions because they hold tasks to a high standard when grading. I’m considering Going for the MSN at WGU in the future based on my experience with getting my BSN

The MSN program really changed this year, anyone entering after 5/1/20 is looking at a vastly different program than any before, with core work in all of the MSN tracks lining up to provide the hours necessary to lay the groundwork for a FNP / DNP.  Quite different than the previous.

Hi!

I'm currently in the MSN Education program and am about to start the "C" level classes, finally focusing more on education. You said you took a whole term for your capstone. Being that it is all virtual now, do you think the Capstone and field experience could be done in 8-10 weeks? I don't have kids but I do work full-time.

I'm in the program at the same pace as my friend/coworker so we really keep each other motivated. We are about 13 weeks ahead of schedule thus far. We really want to finish before the holidays! If we pace 5 weeks per class that will be sufficient (but we've done a couple classes in under 3 weeks).

Any insight for the education classes would be wonderful!

what school do you attend? What program are you in? it depends on all of that. I did not have to do a capstone for my pmhnp.
