Financial Aid....WIA contacts

Published

I don't remember which thread I saw it on, but there was recently a discussion about WIA contacts. I found a listing of all the contacts from different states. I'm sure it will be helpful to someone.

Its weird that with it being federal money, that they allow that local areas to decide how much is used where. That some areas will allow 3 yrs of nursing and others allow only 1 year. I know when I was in there I had a hard time getting her to realize that I was going to a vo-tech instead of IVY-tech... (she kept saying IVY-tech). But she didn't mention that it would only pay for one year of IVY-Tech, just assumed that was where I was going..

So I think that maybe it would be worth it to you to go to your local work-one and just "Play-dumb" and tell them that you over heard someone mention a "nursing grant" that they recieved form work one, and you want to get info and apply for it. Because, it almost sounds like they have a lot of discretion as to what they will pay for, and you never know you may just charm them right into giving you the money!.. Just a thought! Good Luck.

LOL...I might have to try that! Although I've talked to two different people and both told me the same thing so maybe it's a "policy" type thing. Still can't hurt to play dumb though!

Does anyone have any information for Florida? I do have orientation for tomorrow, but they won't tell me anything. THey just say you have to come to the meeting. So I suppose I will be back on here tomorrow to give you guys the information I found here.

So I went to the information meeting this morning where they really didn't go into to much detail. They did say that they will pay for 18 months of training/school. But it had to be a job that was in demand off their list the get from Tallahassee. They didn't mention something about a gas card they will give 4 times a years, but again they didn't go over very much. It was pretty vague. I have to go to an individualized meeting with one of the couselors on the 16th of this month, so I will get back to you guys then.

There seems to be a lot of steps involved in this process. Not sure whats going to happen.

WIA is for anyone who is working toward a 2yr degree that will put you in a job directly after graduation (such as nursing). I don't know it works in other states, but in the state of TN, they will give up to $8000 I think...it might be 10. I am in the process of starting it now, and had to start this process through the unemployment office. Yes, I have a job. You don't have to be unemployed to get this assistance.

I'm also in TN and have startd the WIA process. I went to the initial group meeting and they were very vague. Lots of forms and little information. They said they you had to make sure you applied for a pell grant whether or not you received it did not matter but the application needed to be there. Also, they submit the information to your college to see what aid, scholarships you are also getting and then they will budget an amount for you based on all that. I was very confused though. They will pay for some things and not others. So does your pell get charged first and then WIA covers what pell does not? This doesn't seem quite right since pell can be used for total education cost for the year and not just "tuition and books".

Anyway, I go take a career scope test for them tomorrow to make sure this is the right career path for me I guess. Doubt I will find out more but if I do I will keep posted, like everyone else.

Yes, your WIA funding covers whatever is left over from any financial aid you are eligible for through your school

I thought that WIA was more like a scholarship or a grant? They cover books to don't they? I will find out more information for those of you interested in knowing how florida's wia program runs.

I am in Florida as well.....who did you talk w/to set up an appointment for orientation? I would love o talk to someone about this program....Thanks
