I don't remember which thread I saw it on, but there was recently a discussion about WIA contacts. I found a listing of all the contacts from different states. I'm sure it will be helpful to someone.
So I did my WIA interview today. She told me that they are going to have very limited funds this year. The chances of getting assistance are very low. And even if you do get chosen, they aren't sure they will be able to assist with as much as they usually do.
I am hoping for the best for everyone that is trying to get WIA.
What exacly is WIA??? Do you pay the money back? What are the qualificatins?
Its federal money, given to areas to help, people get training for "high in demand jobs" You don't have to pay it back, but each area is different. Some areas pay for 1 year of school including tutition and even gas, and meals, others will pay for a little longer. Some won't pay gas or anything else. Seems some give up to $8 grand, others up to $ grand. So each area has its own policy. Even county to county. I think for the most part you can find out about it thru your local employment angency. If you have read the post here you will see that they seem to be pretty secretive about what info they give out for some reason. I go take a test for it tomorrow..... SO I will let you all know!
Went to take my "work keys" test today for WIA (they pronounce it "we-ah" ) But other then that, I didn't find out a darn thing about the actual program, as to what they pay for or how much, etc.
But just FYI, for anyone that may need to take the test to qualify, the test I took was sorta like the net, but more for general employment. Math was easier, reading was alot easier, (more like office memos) and they had a "locating information" test. It was pretty simple as well. Took about 3 hours.
Anyways, I have an appt. on the 28th, so I will let you guys know what I find out then
Take care, and keep us posted

What kind of Math was on it? fractions? or what? Thanks
There were 33 questions, I think the test was "applied mathematics" (They gave us all calculators, couldn't use your own) Started out very simple basic addition, then worked up to adding or figuring out sales tax, word problems like which is the better deal (exmp: 12 oz at $1.49 or 16 oz at $1.99) Just really simple stuff. I think there was something about 1/4 pound of something..and 1/2 pound of something else, but they were the simplest of fractions, No, 7/8 or 1 2/5 nothing like that at all.... Very simple stuff.
They also gave us a paper that had alot of the unit measures on it. like a kg=2.2 pounds, etc. and how many inches in a foot, yard, mile etc.
I'm sure you have nothing to worry about.
Thanks, I'm actually just finishing up Algebra so I should be OK.....Math is not my favorite subject....LOL.....I just up I get chosen for the program(remember 600 applications).....I did get another e-mail from the lady I have been dealing with....according to her....they prefer you to be working some to be considered...."work force" was the words she used. I am working pt but will be cutting back another day and a half in the fall for school.....ugh! it's a catch 22!
I didn't read all te responses here but wanted to mention that the WIA program is a federal program but it's administered by individual counties or states so you'll find there is a huge range of what your local WIA program will do for you. Mine paid for my CNA training and prereqs but will not pay for my nursing school because the university I chose wasn't on the "approved" list.
UPDATE.............................
I told everyone I would update them on how we do things in Florida as far as the WIA program goes.
This was my second appointment, where I drove 35 mins to get there. The lady was very nice. In Florida you have to have 18 months or less of school or training to complete. They do this because there goal is to see that you make it out of school. Once you 18 months is near, you apply. If you are accepted you then attend numerous meetings, such as Career planning. You have to keep in contact so that they know you are doing well. Over all the process is long, but I think if you qualify then you should be alright. In order to qualify you have to make below a certain amount, but they also have two other ways to qualify.
If you are interested I would call.
I have to go back after my first semester so that they can see how serious you are about completing school.
Hope this helps :nuke:
