I don't remember which thread I saw it on, but there was recently a discussion about WIA contacts. I found a listing of all the contacts from different states. I'm sure it will be helpful to someone.
It's a grant, you don't pay back. Here in Illinois they will only pay for training program. I applied for them to pay for my first year of Nursing (LPN). They won't pay for the degree program. I jumped through all the loops hurdles and tests and am waiting for them to tell me if I am approved. Try this site: http://www.doleta.gov/usworkforce/ thats the general site look for WIA or your state.
Good Luck
I would like to personally thank all of you who have posted information about this program. My husband has been laid off from his position as a skilled construction worker since March and I am hoping this program can help as I was planning on quitting my job in December due to clinicals. If it won't work for me, I am sure there is someone who will benefit from this thread. Thank you guys!!! I didn't know when I started the nursing program how much nurses (and nursing students) seem to stick together and watch out for one another. This has been proven again to me.
see below for some answers to your questions. i only found out about the wia program when i went to the nursing orientation. you might want to check with your nursing program. i learned nothing about this through our regular financial aid office.
ok, i'm a little confused. it seems like this is a program put in place to support students (only nurses?) while they go through school.no it is not only for nursing students. during the informational meeting i attended, they had given us a list of programs that are eligible.
is this a grant program, i.e. free money like the pell
as mentioned, it more like a grant.
or is this a program where you are required to work for x amount of years in a certain area?
the whole idea behind the wia program is to get people working so that they are taxpayers
or is this more like a loan?
could someone post a link to the site where one can apply. if there is not one, what is the title of the person at the college one should contact?
the earlier contact list link is great, but all it is is an email list, i feel awkward emailing some person inquiring about a program i can't seem to find and don't know much information about.
not sure if it helps, since every situation is different, but if anyone knows if it is worth applying based on my personal stats

thanks guys, it's two in the a:m so i'm gonna pass out. i'll check back on tomorrow.
Ok..i've got the skinny! I just called every single Work One and Work One Express in Indianapolis. I was told that WIA will pay for the last 2 semesters of nursing school only. They said their goal is to get people out into the workforce and they are set up to offer assistance for short-term schooling only so that's why they only pay 2 semesters. You guys in other states are very fortunate that they pay for it all.
I'm still looking for other types of financial aid but it looks like my first year I won't get any help from WIA.

Here are two more sites that might be helpful. Does anyone have any experience with them?
INDYMOM...... I live in Grant County... I was at work one in May and heard mention of this grant (Im starting LPN school at a VO Tech here in Aug)They told me that I could apply for it, but not until after July 1st. So I have an apt. in the morning and I will let you know what they tell me.

INDYMOM;
Went to my appt. today, Here is what I found out. This isn't a grant, its just money, given out to areas of training that they (they being local area's) feel are high needs / high demand jobs. So some areas concider nursing as a high needs, as to where some areas may not. They can use it to train "bricklayers" if they feel the need.
Now what do I have to do :)
I have to do a monthly househould budget, Interview a couple places that would hire an LPN, (get the good the bad and the ugly) also have to interview an LPN. I also have to write an essay, that includes, why I chose this field, how I am going to survive financially while in school, and a 5 year plan of the future.
I had to take an "interest profile" test this morning, that basically showed them that my area of interest lies in this field (duh) and the big kicker is I have to go back Thursday and take a "keys" test which sound like a glorified "NET TEST" 3 hours, (math, reading, comp, yada yada yada) THey won't use my NET TEST results..
I also have to take them my papers from my pell grant, and any paper work from my orientation, which isn't until the 25th. So I also have an appt. for the 28th.
However, she did say that after I take the keys test on Thurs. That she should be able to let me know if I qualified when I came in on the 28th.
Soooooo, I'm looking at it like this, I only have to take a 3 hour test, make a few phone calls (interviews), write a 1 page essay, and print out my budget, all in all probally not even 12 hours of my time, and in return I may get my whole tutition, plus some other expenses paid for! Thats a pretty good investment of time. Don'tchathink?

Sounds like an easy way to go to get tuition paid! The Work One office here told me that they will only pay the last semester or two or nursing school. Bleh. I'm going to go ahead and apply for the Nursing 2000 scholarship because that will hopefully pay for everything and I planned to work in Indiana for at least 2 years after graduation anyhow. Good luck on your test! Let me know how it goes.
