Finally got my head on straight!

Published

I graduted HS in 2007 and started college the following fall. I did very well in HS but my first year in college was the complete opposite. I failed out of some classes and got C's in the rest. I took a break from school and completely felt lost. I did not take college seriously, I didnt study the way I should have and completely gave up on myself. I got a job as a MA and love it! I have been working at my job for 4 years now. A few months ago I started looking into a for profit ADN program and actually considered going, no pre reqs required, I would have been able to start right away! And then it hit me, why on earth would I spend close to 50,000 dollars at this school (which by the way isnt accredited by the NLNAC) when I could get the same degree (with accreditation) at my local community college for about 16,000 dollars!

I am now ready to go back to school and rock it! I know I can do it, I have so much motivation in me. At times it saddens me to know that at the age of 23 I am barely going to start working on my pre-reqs for the nursing program, especially when realizing that many of my HS classmates have already graduated. I think that part of that sadness also pushes me to get this done. I have a supportive family and a very supportive boyfriend of 6 years.

I guess what I'm trying to say with this thread is that it is never too late to go for your dreams.

Here's to anyone else that has been or is in the same boat as me. We can get it done! Come September 24th I will start fresh and go far...I just know it :)

I'm taking 2 classes at a time right now. It seems like just the right balance. Especially since I have a 3 month old that demands a lot of attention :) I'm so excited because the quarter is almost over and I'm on track to get an A+ in both of my classes! I don't think I've ever done this well in school before lol. Must be because I finally found what I'm meant to do!

Good for you! I'm determined to make those A's as well. Good bye TV, good bye social life...I dont care...I will get those A's :)

I just turned 31 today and so glad I found this thread. I had given up on nursing since december when I had to drop micro. I figure nursing wasn't for me. But I still have that longing to want to be a nurse! Anything that makes me feel so strongly about wanting to repeat and try again in classes I did horrible in has to mean something right??? Good luck to everyone!

Omg! I thought i wrote this! Lol. I am also 23 but i graduated in 06 (late birthday). I really wasted the last 4-6 years but im starting over, boosting my gpa with retakes and just being really focused. Im a pct and i work with RNs who are merely one or two years younger. Its kind of depressing and annoying when they discover nursing isnt poop free. Oh well. We'll get there someday. Good luck everyone! Its not about the destination but the journey.

Specializes in Emergency Room.

I graduated high school in 2006 and am barely about to start nursing school today. I applied to an ADN program at my local community college at the beginning of 2009 and was on the wait list for a long time. During this time I earned a non-nursing bachelor's and would've started the ADN program this past spring but due to not taking the TEAS V (did the TEAS 4.0 back in 2009) in time my application was withdrawn. I applied to the ADN program again and to a local BSN program and was accepted. I'll be 26 going on 27 when I graduate but at least now it's not a matter of if but when. I still kick myself now and then when I think of how I could have done better in my pre requisites and started sooner, however, I work in a hospital and all of my coworkers keep saying that I'll still be young when I become a nurse so it helps me put it into perspective and appreciate what I have.

Yes, the 10 year plan it is :)

Time is going to pass whether I want it to or not, either way (unless I kick the bucket soon:uhoh3:) in 4 years I'm going to be 27, I can either be JUST 27 or be 27 with my RN. It's time to make this happen :)

LOVE what you said here, haha. I graduated in '07 but I did go to a tech school and have been working but going for my RN as a second career. So a little different background than you but Im totally in your shoes now - and was totally nodding my head as I read your original post! But what you said in what I quoted is something I am planning to write on my mirror for the really bad days lol.

I'm so thankful I found allnurses, you guys rock. Love that we can encourage each other!

That's great to hear, honestly! I graduated from high school in '08 and have been in a similar situation. I've struggled to find what would be a good fit for me academically because I couldn't imagine how to tie in the work experience I've gained throughout the years but finally it hit me. With my experience in the medical field it would only benefit me to become a nurse. I'm in the process of getting pre-reqs out of the way to apply for a nursing program for next fall so I'm hoping everything will go well. I'm glad I came across this post. Best of luck to all of us! (:
