Hi
Im a final year nursing student in the UK and ive always wanted to move to california. I have done some research in this and the same issue of not having the correct hours and theory in all types of nursing kept arising. does anyone know how I can go about completing hours in these specialities or would I need to take any courses?
In addition is it better to go through an agency to get a job or to approach various hospitals directly?
Look foward to hearing from you!

The hours both clinical and theory have to be completed at a recognised institute and as far as I am aware there is nowhere in the UK that currently offers this service. Also be aware of retrogression and that CA has a very high unemployment making it hard to find employer willing to assist you with your process.
Thank you for the quick reply.
So do you know how I can about finding out where these institutions are based?
Nothing can really be decided until you have qualified and have a completed set of transcripts, then apply to a state (not CA as they do not accept applications without a US SSN) and see what they come back with. Then you can work out the next stage. What ever you decide you do currently have 5+ years wait ahead of you. Currently only applications for EB3 (which nurses come under) filed early 2005 are being processed at the moment

There are no visas available for nurse employment now, or in the forseeable future. Until there are, there is nothing you can do (except obtain permanent residency via another means, such as family-based immigration).
OH really???? oh nooo =[

Hi Maria,
Im currently starting my final year of Nursing and wanting to do the same thing, I have been reseraching for quite some time abou the process, and yes is very daunting.. and the only way i see possibly is by other means of ganining citizenship. I am considering NY as mainly they do not require a ss# to get a licence but do recommend you doing the 2 courses which are available to do online. I wanted to know if you wanted to see this journey, if moving to the states is something you are willing to do and go through extensive hardship to get to the end? lol... I dont know how to Pm or msg on this forum so maybe someone can advise me on how to do this. First thing first is to grauate and apply for cgfn, and ther board u are wanting to apply to can advise on the required hours to make up, then look into community colleges they make take on guest students and take it from there..........
Nadine..
Ps if any information is incorrect Im sure the administrators will correct this information.
Hi nadine,
U don't understand how much this information you've just given me, has brightened my day! :) I've been looking into the process for years now and I'm willing to go about this looong process to get there :).
I'm not sure how to pms either lol I've only just fully updated my profile and using it a lot more now.
Where can I get info on this process? Should I go on the NY state board website?
Site requirements are 15 or more posts to be able to send a pm.
All state BON links can be found at the bottom of the page. NY requires CVS which can be a long process and any application for license can only be completed once you have graduated from university and transcripts are complete. Many states will accept application without a SSN however not all states will issue a license without a SSN although once in the US with a valid work/immigrant visa a SSN can be applied for and a license issued
Hey Maria
Your welcome, i dont know if i can send my email, or are we not allowed to do that? and we could possibly keep in touch and see this process through?
Nadine
Just be aware that if you go through the process now to get your US license (while visa retrogression continues), you may be wasting your money. Some state nursing boards will give you a license with no SSN but they will then require the SSN for the renewal or else the license will be suspended.
