filipino to migrate in Canada.... what to do to become a RN?

i am new to this forum. i am a r.n. in philippines and will migrate in canada (vancouver). i haven't actually practiced my profession as a nurse in hospital setting instead as a company nurse.

actually i don't know have an idea  as to what to do to become a r.n. in canada.

should i need to take up another how many years of nursing in canada?

what should i do? kindly help me please!! thanks a lot.

finally, CNO granted me an eligibility to take the exam...

for those who are planning to have your credentials assessed,

i have sent all the necessary documents:

certificate of trainings and seminars

transcript of records

syllabus and course description of my BSN and MN subjects

i think the additional degree of being Masters in Nursing was the reason CNO granted me eligibility :D

Ledzil, I have a PR and Masters degree in nursing too. I will stay in ontario. how much is the CNO assessment fee? what should I do first? my ielts already expired, is it true that it doesnt matter with CNO whether you took the General training or Academic IELTS category? I plan to take the academic this time, because when I applied for Permanent residency i only took the general training.

When I got the test results, I plan to apply to CNO for assessment. I cannot apply yet if I don't have ielts results right?

Since I plan to leave in september or october, if ever i'm done with ielts on august and got the results, what would be the first step to apply in CNO? click the IEN application kit from the CNO website? the they will send me forms that I will give to PRC and the University where I got my BSN degree(Im a UP grduate), and the Univ where I got my Masters degree too? Should my school send directly to CNO the syllabus/course descriptions/RLEs too?

aside from the certificates, etc, what else do I need to include?

Which is better, to apply when I'm in Ontario or to apply here in the Philippines after I got my ielts results? I know my address in Ontario because I will live with my Grandfather. How long will it take them to mail the forms I need to accomplish? My concern is if I'll give my mailing address here, if it will take 2 months or so, I might have left already for Canada. So better address it there in Ontario? what do you think?

While waiting for the eligibility, I plan to work as a caregiver, a health care aide or any job in Ontario as long as I know how to do the work.

I want everything that I need to do accomplished here as much as possible while I'm still here in the Philippines. It's okay for me to wait, I just need to clarify these things. thank you. :)

The application packet from the CNO is now being sent via email. Wait for the packet before you do anything as they are now doing the assessment in stages unlike before where they will just send you all the forms you need to accomplish all together.

CNO accepts General IELTS. You can start the application without the IELTS just yet. You will only need that for the actual issuance of your license given you are granted the eligibility to take the CRNE and have passed it.

If I apply as a health care aide or nurse assistant or caregiver, is the IELTS result a requirement for these jobs for me to get hired even though I have a PR VISA already? If not, maybe I shouldn't take the IELTS just yet.

I'm confused now if I should take the IELTS here, because if I havent applied to CNO right away(I'm still completing my funds for the application), my IELTS might expire again.

advanced question: let's say I've already worked as a health care aide/caregiver or any similar job for a year or so(meaning I've stayed in Canada for quite some time as a permanent resident), then I decided to apply for registration in CNO, will they still require the IELTS though I've stayed in Canada for example a couple of years already?

Please do not post the same question in several places. It makes it harder to keep track. Post your questions in one place (preferably the International forum) and wait for your answers. Alternatively ask the college of RN

Yes they might. Since English is not your first language, they take into consideration your country of origin and where you received education and not your current location.

They might still require you to submit one even if you are already in Canada for a year or two working as a caregiver. One year ago when I applied, they have this policy that if you come from an English speaking country and have worked there for at least one year, that you can be exempted from the english test requirement of the College. I don't know if it's still the same now. And I reckon that the policy means if you are working as an RN/LPN in an english speaking country (check the CNO website for the list of countries) and not as a nursing aid or caregiver. But please do more research on this to verify.

By the way, why would you like to work as a caregiver/nursing aid when you can apply straight for assessment as an RN with CNO?

This is just my suggestion, take the IELTS and simultaneously apply for assessment as RN as soon as you completed your funds.

My granddad wants me to leave asap. He doesnt me to take the IELTS anymore here. He wants me to set aside first applying for CNO. He wants me to work as a caregiver first. Then maybe after a couple of years apply for CNO.

even if I will work as a caregiver OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL, will the employer ask for the IELTS results?

I know IELTS is a requirement when I apply for CNO, but I WILL NOT APPLY YET (Maybe in a couple of years or maybe not at all). I can always take the IELTS when I'm decided to apply.

so, do most caregiver employers require IELTS or no?because my granddad claims, he is a caregiver and was not required of IELTS when he worked outside the hospital.

If I get hired as a caregiver without IELTS (or maybe I can show my expired IELTS result) then I will leave asap. because when i apply in CNO after a couple of years and I took the IELTS now, it will be useless as it will expire after 2 years.

I do not agree with your grandad's advice to delay your application to the CNO. You graduated a couple of years ago and you have minimal nursing experience, if you delay a couple more years, you risk becoming ineligible to become registered in Ontario. You will not be able to prove you have enough nursing experience during the 5 years post graduation. Also, Canadian healthcare employers prefer to hire nurses with nursing experience over caregiver experience, so wokring as a caregiver for a couple of years may hinder your potential career as a nurse.

i agree with you. I got my license here in he philippines in 2004, I've worked as a Clinical Instructor/Lecturer in a University where I teach nursing students for 7 years up to now. I want to think of my career as a nurse in Canada. but my granddad wants me to leave immediately. though I have expalined these to him, he would not listen. he wants me to leave immediately and work as a caregiver and set aside my registration in CNO. :((

You are a UP graduate, I trust that you know what you are doing. Although I will be very candid in saying that not a lot of people here would give you a thumbs-up with the kind of plan that you have. Your grandpa surely wants only the what is best for you, but he can also be wrong without him even knowing it. You going to Canada pronto might seem to be a good idea for your grandpa now, but later on this plan can make it harder for you to become an RN/LPN in Canada (as the other poster have said). But then again, we don't know the whole story of your situation, maybe you have your reason for this.

By the way, caregiving is not a regulated profession so it depends on the individual employer what they would require of you, some may ask you for an IELTS and some may not. I have a friend who went to Canada and was required by his employer to submit an IELTS result. On the other hand, another friend of mine was hired as a caregiver without the need to do an english test.

All the best.

Thank you. I'll follow what he wants. I will leave next month. Perhaps, I will go back here after a year to get all documents ready and maybe I will take the IELTS here. sigh. I'll give in to what he wants for the time being. At least, it's not gonna be him who will say "i told you so" eventually. :) Grandparents are really difficult to deal with. Sometimes they act as if they know everything. We'll see.

Thanks colleagues. You've been very hepful. :) Hope I can meet filipino nurses in Ontario. :)

hi im newbie here too, a nurse and planning to apply for assessment in college of registered nurses in manitoba canada, my husband is also sponsoring me, so while my papers is still in process im preparing all my documents needed for crnm assessment. In fact, i just took the ielts exam last june 25, 2011 and received the result last july 8, i was saddened that the ielts score requirement had increased a week before my ielts result was released.., my score is as follows:8,7,6,7.5=obs7; never knew that crnm will increase their required score this month.., their old ielts score requirement was (6,6,6,7=obs 6.5) which is currently increased to (7.5,6.5,7,7=obs 7).. sad i only got 6 on my writing.. i met the old ielts score requirement which is only effective until june 30 2011..:(
