Fictional-Hospital Scrubs for Real-Life Nurses

So you're about to have surgery. You're probably nervous. But the medical staff seems calm and competent, and that's reassuring, because you're counting on them to make pretty serious decisions. You glance over at a nurse, and you notice the tag on her scrubs. "Grey's Anatomy," it says.

Whether you're a fan of ABC's hit hospital drama or not, you might find this . . . notable. How odd is it that a profession that asks people to trust its members to take life-or-death actions would advertise a brand based on a TV show on the job? Even if you enjoy following the private tribulations and messy love lives of an imaginary hospital staff during prime time, you would probably prefer to see the people delivering your care as laser-focused pros leading a personal-distraction-free existence.

But it turns out that "Grey's Anatomy" scrubs have been popular with medical professionals pretty much from the moment they were first produced, in 2006. For most patients, the branding is probably too small and subtle to notice, and I suppose if it made my caregivers happy, I would be fine with anything that put them in a good mood. But if this catches on and medical uniforms routinely reference medical-themed entertainments, let's just agree on this: no "Nurse Jackie" scrubs, O.K.?

Ohhh, for pity's sake, can the writer get a life?

The writer of the OP/ED doesn't want "Nurse Jackie" scrubs - I would be more worried about "House" scrubs on the competency level.

I'm surprised at the backlash on this article! Shouldn't our patients always judge our competency based on what we are wearing?

I wonder how many patients could tell you what their nurse was wearing pre-op. I have a hard time believing very many, it's not like they have nothing better to worry about at this time. Shoot sometimes I can't tell you what I was wearing yesterday.

The NYT author could have gone far worse places with this topic!! What about grown women walking around in hot pink crocs and disney scrubs?? I see some nurses wearing pretty ridiculous outfits around my hospital (no peds floor either, that's the exception)...I'll take the Grey's anatomy scrubs any day, at least they look professional!

I'm sitting here (in Australia, where scrubs aren't really marketed) wondering if there's such a thing as Scrubs scrubs, because I would donate my right foot to science in return for a pair of scrubs that actually look good on!!

Hehe...Scrubs scrubs! Love that show. Try Koi : Koi - The home of designer scrubs. If you find 'em on sale they are pretty reasonable...and super cute!

Grey's Anatomy scrubs were the only ones in the scrub store that I could consistently find in short sizes and solid colors (which I prefer over prints)...but I've never seen the show! I own three sets...

I watched one episode of the show and hated it. I bought my first pair at a scrub store without even looking at the label. They look good on the female form, professional without looking fussy and I like the solid colors.

i love grey's anatomy scrubs! along with iguana med. those are the only two brands that i will wear. i am not a large person but it seems i am always hot. these scrubs allow my skin to breathe and i don't get all sweaty in them vs. if i wore cherokee or landau (which were required during nursing school clinicals and i sweated my butt off all day). they are great! try 'em out!

Grey Anatomy scrubs are very comfortable compared to others on the market, part of the original demand for them. Also as a guy there are not a lot of brands designed for the male-body-design, this brand fits nice and is comfortable.
