Feeling sick but don't want to call out on first day of orientation

Published

Just need to vent- I feel sick as a dog and today is my first day of orientation for a new job in LTC. I'm supposed to go in at 3pm but debating whether I should call out or request to leave early. I just hate to have a call out on my record so soon. :crying2:

Ideal world= employer cares if you are sick, and encourages you to take care of yourself.

Real world= employer wants the shifts filled, and if you tip over, they might prop you up to hold up a plant in the corner, until someone can sweep you to your car- where you're informed that the absence counts against your attendance record.

My brother faced the same situation when he was an intern after med school when he got sick on Christmas day.

You bet he dragged himself to work.

The repercussions of being remembered as the intern who called out sick on a holiday would be worse and longer lasting than the pain of working when unwell.

I don't give a hoot re understaffing anymore. If I'm sick, I'm sick, I call, the agency gets p****d off, so what. Staffing is THEIR problem, not mine.

I had 2 sick days on my last clinical. I got really run down with all the study & shift work (yes I took multivitamins, exercised when I could). I was sick too with gastro symptoms but was told if I had one more day off, I would fail (university policy). Well I went in, washed my hands & arms like mad all day, wore gloves inbetween spending breaks in the toilet (couldn't eat), & somehow got through. I went home & slept for about 16 hours straight. Next day, my hands etc were red raw from all the washing.

I could not have done this if I was older - I would have had to call in sick and though I probably would have gotten away with a Dr's note, I'm glad in a way I stuck it out. But it wasn't pleasant to say the least.

Well? Did you go in? Hope you feel better.

Never call in on your first day for feeling crappy, it is likely just your nerves!

well, good lord- by now the op has probably been promoted to don...

yo- [/size] op..... what happened??? :)

Man it sucks going in to work sick but I get to do it tomorrow on my 2nd day at a new facility. Oh yippie. Had 80+ hours PTO at the job I just left & haven't been sick in a year. Want to call in but wouldn't dream of it!

Well unless you have a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea I'd go in. Wear a mask. (You cannot give someone asthma you can only cause an exacerbation).
