Fear of Retirement!

how-did-you-survive-after-retirement.jpg.e27ab392e6b72ab5150fe8d1c415a8e5.jpg

Hi, I'm retiring at the end of January. I was an LPN for 15 years before going to college for my degree in nursing.

I've worked in many different fields, med/surg, Angio/interventional, poison control, etc. I've worked in nursing in some capacity since I was 15.

I'm 65 now and just running out of steam.

But I am terrified of trying to figure out who I am without the structure, support and satisfaction of nursing.

I've heard all about hobbies and volunteering,  but at the end of the day, my lack of social connections and activities outside of my career are glaringly obvious.

I'm afraid I'll be depressed (on meds for that for a long time) and just not do well.

Any advice?

How have you retired nurses coped?

Thanks!

I have so many plans (going to school for fine arts----something I wanted to do long before I became a nurse) and enjoying lunches out with my wonderful husband, etc that I have no fear or worry about retirement. In about 18 months, I can hopefully transition into part time clinic work or something to keep money coming in until I am social security eligible in a few years.....(about 6). But who's counting? NOT ME. By then all bills will be paid and the  house will nearly be paid off.

I will have time on my hands but I know I will keep busy and happy.

Wishing you the best OP. Retirement is a big transition and one of life's most stressful times for many. I hope yours is seamless.

Thank you SmilingBluEyes, and same to you!  Transitioning to part time is something I did too and is definitely helpful. Enjoy your retirement!

Reading, exercising, learning tai chi...

Thoroughly recommend learning Tai Chi, keeps everything moving and is very restful.

I can understand your fear of "retirement" from nursing but just remember that life is short...now you have the free time to do what ever you like (e.g. travel, join social/charity groups, hobby). Happiness is a state of mind....change your mindset and "your" world will change...Good luck.
