FDA approves infant vaccine for diarrhea virus

wish it were around when my son was 6 mo. He was so very sick w/this, and so dehydrated, I was out of my mind w/worry. i would have gladly prevented this in him, if i could have....

We had a bad outbreak of this last year, a lot of sick children...My daughter's preschool and one other was the only ones that didn't have it.

lets' just say, the rotavirus had my son very sick for weeks. I would love to have prevented the misery he suffered at such a young age...his butt was literally bleeding from the constant watery diarrhea ------i distinctly remember him pooping out whatever we fed him, almost immediately. it was pure hell.

Which chemical in antifreeze are you talking about? And did you do actual research on the chemical yourself or did you get the information from another web site?
*Also why did diseases such as scarlet fever, etc go away without vaccines?
Where did it go, because I have seen scarlet fever several times in the last two months. We now know the orgin of the disease and treat it with drugs, when it is found.

I am just curious, but some (not all) of you have mentioned that you do not believe that the vaccines are safe for your children because of the mercury, but feel that it is a good idea for children of third world countries to receive them. I may have missed something here, and I will go back and reread the posts. But if this is the case, why is no one advocating for the children of these countries? If you feel it is unsafe for your children, why are they not unsafe for all children?

Thank you sickandtired, I was thinking the same thing. You made a great point that is being ignored.

to Wincha: I hope your children do not get chicken pox. I watched an otherwise healthy 3 year old die from renal failure secondary to Chicken Pox. There are HUNDREDS of diseases out there. The vaccines are intended to fight the deadliest ones. Please research the autism connection. I do not believe there is evidence to connect vaccines to autism.

scarlet fever did not go away....we just don't see it a lot cause we treat strep before it breaks out, USUALLY.MY son had had scarlet fever at age 4 due to a fast-growing strep infection that started in his throat. Saw firsthand how ugly it can get. Don't know of a vaccine for this, at all.

And just because illnesses caused by pathogens such as strep are usually self-limiting, it doesn't mean that there aren't secondary infections or complications that can have devestating effects.

I think most of us make up our minds based on our experiences. People whose children develop autism at the same time as their immunizations may link the two and be against vaccinations from then on. Like you, I've seen the result of some of these diseases in non-vaccinated children and I wouldn't risk that. My friend's daughter was hospitalized and in terrible shape thanks to a pertussis outbreak. Everyone in my family was vaccinated and none of us suffered any ill effects. I still get my flu shot every year. I'm not worried about it. Even the thimerisol thing doesn't bug me much. You probably get a lot more mercury eating a can of tuna and I'm certainly exposed to more toxins driving into LA than I am from a flu shot.

As far as phenoxyethanol (the antifreeze one) in vaccines, Here is some more info that shows both what the ingredients are and what phenoxyethanol is, this one for me was a PITA to research and understand:

I checked out the pages you listed, the first two pages are biased and not good sites to source scientific research. Their pages are filled with a lot of misinformation, and not enough facts. As for understanding the information, it takes patients and an open mind(years of chemistry helps as well).

I am a scientist at heart and I need unbiased facts, so not only did I go to the pages you listed and checked out the ingredients. I also got the MSDS sheets of the most common brands of antifreeze with ethylene glycol(chemically listed as 2-ETHANEDIOL and 2'-OXYBIS) as the active ingredient. After doing comparisons and talking with a chemist and a chemical engineer(yes, I have been busy tonight) it is evident to me that 2-phenoxyethanol(that is in vaccines) is not that same chemical as the two I listed above in antifreeze. I could not find the chemicals I listed in any of the ingredient listings for the vaccines. I could find the one you listed but it is not used to manufacture any commercial antifreeze products it is a preservative used in health and beauty products, veterinary medicine, as well as many of the foods we eat everyday.

The link you provided for ethylene glycol ethers is to a general category of chemicals solvents not a specific chemical, as we know from medicine many drugs can sound alike but do very different things.

I do feel it is very important to be fully informed in our decisions as consumers, but we need factual, not anecdotal sources for our information. If you like I could provide the links to the MSDS sheets and the information pages for the chemicals listed. I hope this helps.

My son actually was in the clinical trial for this vaccine. I have not yet received the info of whether or not he received the vaccine or placebo. What I do know is that he entered the trial at three months and has NEVER had any diarrhea or any kind of stomach virus. He is now 5. He has been around rotovirus many times and I have had a stomach virus at least twice a year due to the prevalence in the ER. I repeat that he has never had any stomach symptoms. Maybe it was the vaccine or maybe just luck but either way a Godsend for a single mom who can't afford to miss work for a sick child. Just something to think about!
