I know you didnt disagree, but you kept saying that people in the diversity program had high points too, and some got in the regular way...and the point I was trying to stress was that if a white female had objectively high points, there are no programs to help her out, and that it is a limited access program for a reason, and there is a cutoff for a reason...anyone below the cutoff is.....well, cutoff! And that there should be no other way beside the regular way. That was the ENTIRE point I wqas trying to make throughout all this.

Anyway, you right, there is nothing i can do about it, I'm writing a letter but I doubt it will do any good, if it's meant to be for me to get in then I will. I have more important things to use my time thinking about that this...like getting ready for Christmas for one

I agree with all that you said, and like I said I was looking at the positive things this program could do! Anyways Merry Christmas and Happy New Year's!!!!

I have a few observations to share:

We have 7 guys in our class of 24.

We have 6 minorities

We have 1 non-native. (English not first language)

Not one of them had the advantage of the diversity program. In our original group we lost 2 white females and 1 white male.

Someone mentioned that proof that nursing is a majority white because of the new england population is silly. New England is predominantly white anyway. Why don't you examine the population of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia? Those states have a majority black population. I am sure that their population is equally represented in their nursing numbers.

I have never believed that "affirmative action" was the right thing to do. I remember when I was young that my mother would share that "if only you were a black female with a spanish surname..." That was in the 70s when that combination would get you almost anything!

I was born a simply white female. My father never discouraged me from my dream of attending the USAFA when I was 12....even though in 1970 they didn't accept females. The point is to allow and encourage the dream and they can make it without affirmative action.

ALL that being said, I have shared with both minority females and some males that I know that the program exists. Many miss the cutoff. That doesn't mean they won't be good nurses, it means they were given a chance to prove themselves. They will have to pass the same classes and the same NCLEX.

Understand this......

I applied to the USAFA in 1979. In that day, and to this day, only 25% of the accepted class was female. I had the grades. I had the nomination (Presidential). I had the activities (Varsity Cheerleader, Varsity Gymnastics, State Champion Marine Physical Fitness team). There were males in my school who were accepted that didn't have all I had. They were accepted. I was not. If I were male, it would have been different, but unfortunately for me, there was a large group of intelligent, talented females that applied in 1979.

I was disappointed. I took a different route (USAF 4 yr scholarship).

There is always a way to acheive your dream if you want it bad enough.

Good post Flmomof5!!!! :)

If people in the diversity program got in the nursing program the regular way with enough points, why are they still in the diversity program?

Are there extra perks to the diversity program other than getting in with lower points than the cutoff?

The diversit program is for people who didn't get in the regular way. Not all people though. Just males and anyone who isn't white.

Good post FlMomof5.

I couldn't agree more. People speak all the time about how they want racial equality, and everyone to be treated the same. We have a nursing program that only see's our point's and everyone has an equal chance of getting in. The only thing that affects your entrance is your grades. But yet we also have a program that gives special and uneaqual treatment to people based on their race and gender, and isolates them in a completly different nursing program.

The diversity program is more than a program for people who didnt get in the regular it is a SCHOLARSHIP! so yea it does have another perk!

well how exactly does it work? Are there going to be a certain number of the 144 spring spots reserved for minorities and males? Or is this a whole separate nursing program all together? Do I have the chance of getting bumped out of acceptance in place of a minority? I can't find any other info on this program

Its new they just got funded for this starting springterm, they have 24 additional seat reserved for like 100 people competing for the scholarship, even if they got in the regular way they could get in the program for the scholarship perks, they sent something thru the mail but I didnt really pay attention to it since I got in and already had scholarship, they also have attend 4 hour mandatory study sessions every week and also mandatory saturday workshops once a month, all I know is they are in 2 separate sections together, they didnt do the lottery which I thought sucked not fair but oh well! :)

I honestly didnt even know they were allowing people in that way at first I thought it was just a scholarship but some not all got in that way...

Oh so there are no seats reserved for anyone? They just add 24 extra seats for the minority program?

They are still working kinks out of the scholarship but they will be adding a couple more seats to the program for them, I don't they added all 24 seats since half of them had already earned their seats the regular way, you will learn that this school is very disorganized and make sure you highlight your prereqs and NAT scores because they miscalculated a lot of applicants points this term!!!
