I'm supposed to do a paper on a famous living nurse...but I can't find anything! All I find are the typical ones, who are dead. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!!

You might try Echo Heron who is a Critical Care Nurse in San Francisco, California and has written several books about her experiences in the ER, ICU and CCU. Her books are very interesting.

How about infamous? I'm not trying to glorify the man, but sadly, he is probably one of the most well-know living nurses.
Suspicious Death
setSize(curSize);Somerset Medical Center
A most astonishing case began after two people at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, New Jersey were given the wrong medication. The ICU nurses who discovered this did not yet know that they were sharing in a disturbing experience with other healthcare workers in nearby institutions. They also did not know that their own institution was soon to be warned, and that SMC would break the case.

I am not sure how many people consider her "famous living nurse" but her ideas are interesting. Teri Mills published her idea about a National Nurse position here: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/05/20/opinion/20mills.html?ex=1274241600&en=b754e77c6b21cc33&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
You can find a lot of articles and opinions about her and this issue on the Net.

Maybe Deborah Burger RN?
Active and up to date.
Deborah Burger is a Registered Nurse and President of the California Nurses Association (CNA). CNA is a growing, progressive, female-dominated union dedicated to achieving a single standard of healthcare for all Americans. Over the past year, Burger has led the CNA through a wide-ranging confrontation with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger over his attack on patient safety laws, his unpopular special election, and his record-setting corporate fundraising. Burger has been nursing for over thirty years, in almost every hospital unit, and currently specializes in diabetes care management in Santa Rosa, California.

There are many "famous" nursing theorists alive and well and working today -- e.g. Jean Waton, Patricia Benner, Nola Pender, Jacquiline Fawcett, etc. Pick up a nursing theory textbook and you'll find lots of contemporary theorists.
You may also be interested in the leades of nursing organizations. You would probably find some information on them (along with many examples of their writings) if you browse the publications of those organizations. The same is true of the editors of the major journals.
Wow, thank you all so much! I'm going to check out all your ideas and see what I can come up with. I really really appreciate it :)
Yes! Dr. Patricia Benner.
