Just a thought. The nurse is licensed and therefore trusted to tell and document the truth. Yet the second some dysfunctional, sociopathic patient or family member complains about something (that nurse killed my baby!), management brings her into the office and asks "why did you kill her baby?"
Of course you're not baby killing. What you're doing is you're not getting them water fast enough when the doctor made them NPO. You can't give them a second dose of Dilaudid because they didn't feel the "hit" from the first one.
Just wondering. No secret to me hospitals complain about a nursing shortage when they treat the nurse so much like an imbecile.

Must have shoes, shirts; can't eat food walking in the aisles; can't follow staff into areas where it says Staff Only....
and no dear, you CAN'T sit behind the nurses station for a chat, because you couldn't possibly be expected to sit in the visitors room...
I recently had to answer a formal complaint made because the pt didn't like the sandwiches (that I didn't make)
Another one made a verbal complaint because he couldn't hack into the hospital intranet
Somebody told me that I have a face like a hatchet and they didn't like it - it's the only one I have
The best one ever was when there was a complaint about a 'short fat blonde nurse' but no name so the management sent it to me to answer. My response to management earned me a whole day 'customer service' course. I never met the patient and hadn't worked on during her stay on our ward...

Okay, that last part made me laugh out loud.
I wonder how they'd describe me. Probably "that psychotic looking nurse with the crazy eyes."
I'd be "the one that looks like a fat giraffe...." What's funny (not) is this happened to me -- someone complained, my boss yanked me in, started yelling, and I said, "wait, wait, I didn't work that day." She looked like she'd been smacked in the face with a fish. "You didn't work --"
"No. I got called out."
"Well who did?" What? I'm not the manager! How would I know? I wasn't here!
There was a management turnover after I left that hospital...and from what I hear, that manager was on the receiving end of a big dose of karma from the new management...
If I had $1 for every time my old NM said to me, "Anna" (not the name of the resident) said you refuse to answer her CB at all last night. Please make sure you answer it tonight." I'd say, "You know Anna makes up different things about different staff members, including stuff that couldn't possibly be true." (She's very with it....she remembered me after I was on a 3 week vacation, including where I went and how long I was gone, knew I was in school, etc) "Well she says you didn't. I mean, I know she makes stuff up and I know you wouldn't ignore a resident but I still have to say something to you." What.......If I had a $1 for every time that happened I'd be a wealthy ex nurse lol.
I once pointed out that as long as she was complaining about me and as long as my NM acted like she believed her and reprimanded me I might as well ignore her CB so at least I'd be getting in trouble for actually doing something wrong. NM wasn't amused.
There is actually an anticipated shortage over the next 10 - 20 years nationwide as babyboomers age. With the economy being so bad however, nurses are working longer and that off-sets the need for new nurses to some degree. Statistically however, there is a nursing shortage varying by state and geographical region. In fact, somewhere recently I saw a list of states and the nursing shortages by state. Some places had no shortage (RI, HI) and others had significant needs for nurses.
There's not a shortage of nurses, there's a shortage of nurses willing to do the offered job in the conditions and for the money that's offered. There's a reason the highest paid nursing job around here is in the local prison, and the lowest is the 9-5, no call, no weekends, no holidays positions in a doc's office.
Pretty Much anywhere in the northwest!!!!! There are very few nursing programs here.
WHERE? I need to know! :lol2: My husband and I just traveled through Tacoma-Portland-Seattle logging 1400 miles in the car and all along the Oregon coast and throughout the northern extremes of the country we looked for jobs on websites as we passed through and you know what? There was limited availability. From what I could tell, hospitals from Anacortes, WA to Bellingham, WA were not even hiring. I complained to my husband that the nearest nursing program is 90 MILES from bellingham so how can this BE?
BTW, we are NOT new grads and both have multiple certifications.

Is there a way to do more than kudos this? So.totally.agree.
"...but I still have to say something to you...."
Oh how I despise this statement. This means "I'm placating you but still think you are wrong." I hate it when NM play both sides of the fence like that. If you think I was wrong, say so. If you think they are wrong, don't call me into the office.
Yeeeeaaaaahhhh......
