So I followed the steps from this thread that I found back in November: https://allnurses.com/success-stories-nursing/i-got-job-532817.html and in the poster talks about how she super stalks recruiters and sends them her resumes thus scoring her dream job. All in the span of 3 weeks. It took me 2 weeks!! Ha! I GOT A JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I followed her suggestions and created a Linked In account, searched for recruiters, DONs, PCDs, at all the hospitals I wanted to work at. Snazzed up my resume and wrote a really great CL w/ an eye catching opening sentence "So&So Hospital is known for their mission in providing high-class patient care and satisfaction." Yup, I researched the hospitals and implemented their "vision" or "mission" statement in my CL. I used the tricks for the email addresses and verified them on verify-email.org sent them away on November 28th and 29th. I got 2 emails back from one hospital from the DONs saying that they are happy that I'm interested and I should apply online, yada, yada, yada. Wrote them back thanking them for their response. Then BOOM the 30th I got a call from a recruiter at their hospital! Coincidence?! I think not!!! Especially since I applied at this hospital 2 months prior with no call backs. Had a phone interview w/ the nurse recruiter. I really let my charismatic personality shine. She told me she would send mY resume to the PCD and I would hear back within the week. BOOM!! The VERY next morning I got a call back from her to set up an interview. Interviewed for the Total Joint Replacement Unit on Med/Surg on December 2nd. The interview went great. I met with the recruiter and we discussed benefits, interviewed with the PCD, had a panel interview with the nurses on the unit after the unit tour. Again, I let my sparkling personality shine and really pressed about my passion for patient care and team work. Met with the PCD again who said she wanted to hire me and would like me to continue in the hiring process. Did a drug screen that day and another phone interview the following monday. Then I got my official "You're Hired" call yesterday!! I start orientation on Jan. 9 making $10 more than I make now. I got my 12s on the night shift PLUS they are willing to work around my schedule w/ church and give me Thursday & Saturday nights off. And the HUGE plus is they want me to pursue my BSN and will pay 100% if I go to George Mason. What?!?!?! AND a $500 bonus once I get my BSN. DOUBLE WHAT?!?! The only thing is they require a 2 year contract after my 90 days, but I'm totally ok with that! They told me I can transfer to different units if it doesn't work out. So ecstatic!! Happy Dance!!!   7. That's a good question! I'm interested in the responses too. Does work there can't as acute experience?
  8. I think if you pursue this Preceptorship you will be opening a very big door for you in your career. You will already have a foot in the door and if you work extremely hard and have a great attitude I could see you being offered a position. I wish the best for you and I do believe you have a huge advantage. I know many nurses you were hired after precepting on their floors. I, however, precepted on the PACU, and no matter how much they liked me and how much the DON raved about me to the floors I interviewed on I was still not hired. C'est la vie.
  9. I never thought to add my waitressing experience from Cracker Barrel or my teller experience from Bank of America. Should I just list that under my skills? "10 years of customer service experience from waitressing and banking." I just don't want my resume to end up 5 pages long. I guess I can ask my friends to give my resume to the managers directly?   10. Bill, I love it. You're like a breath of fresh air. I totally agree with you. I do remember back in 2009 that Hospitals were only interviewing to interview and had no intentions of hiring b/c they needed to meet the "quotas" that you are referring to. Seems like that tactic has popped back up. Why does it have to be when I'm applying?...Again?! I have people who work in hospitals too. A couple have spoke up to the managers, one knows someone in HR who passed on the resume to the nurse recruiters. But still waiting. Yes, yes. I have a job and believe me I am more than grateful to put food on the table and at least be practicing as a nurse. The only REAL thing I have going is Washington Hospital Center in DC has a RN Residency program starting in Feb. They're accepting apps from not only new grads, but experienced RNs looking to switch fields and are lacking hospital expertise. I personally know 2 people who work there. One RN on OB and a nursing director on a step down unit. She already voiced that she would love to have me, but w/o that "magical year of med surg" as one poster put it, I would have to wait for them post apps for the residency program sometime this month. The bright side, she's a DON and I like to believe I will have some leverage over the other applicants.
  11. I am more of a night owl and my best friend works PT nights and doesn't seem to have any issues. I'm looking to get into a hospital not just b/c of the schedules, but it's where I have ALWAYS wanted to be. I want to learn, I want the challenge, I want to advance in my career. I'm going to try that "LinkedIn" website. Do you think it would be a good idea for me to email the Manager I interviewed with back in August? There are positions still open on that unit. Couldn't hurt to let her know I'm still interested.

So I graduated in May 2009 when the economy took that wonderful fall and all the glorious stories you heard during nursing school, such as "$10,000 sign on bonus", "hospitals need nurses!", "you'll have job security as a nurse" disappeared. Blah! Whatever. $10,000 sign on bonus? It's like a fairytale now. Yeah, I have a job, but I'm not happy. I want to be in the hospital on the floor giving patient care. I want to hang IVs. I want to work 12 hours nights. I want to spend more time with my 10 month old son, instead of coming home M-F at 6 at night only to feed him, bath him, 1 hour of play time, and then off to bed. It kills me everyday I leave him, because I DON'T DO ANYTHING as a clinical supervisor. I can feel the life being sucked out of me here and 6 months have passed and I have achieved nothing and learned nothing in my career. So I've been apply since August only to hear that I have no hospital experience and my 2 years triaging patients and supervising in a family practice is worth crap. Ok, but the New Grad you're hiring is more experienced then me, how? I can draw blood on the hardest of them all. I assess wound healing, remove staples and sutures, triage on the phone and in person. I have experience in ALL age groups-peds, geriatrics. Toradal, Epi, Phenergan, Rocephin-I give them too. I have to manage my time and prioritize just like the RNs in the hospital. I have to balance blood draws, immunizations, allergy/testosterone injections, ekgs, spiro, ALL while making sure there is a patient in the room for the doctor to see. So why is it I'm being overlooked? I just need some advice. Any HR people out there? I've applied to 12 different hospitals sent 100s of applications and got 1 interview in August, only to be denied and every application I have sent after has been de-nied. So I'm at a loss. I don't want to risk losing my license and my sanity in a SNF or Rehab. I haven't followed up w/ calls to HR. I want them to know I'm really interested, but don't want to come across as harassing. Majority are city hospitals in DC or the surrounding area, so that whole "bring your resume to the unit and ask to speak to the manager" is not going to work. I don't know...
  14. Very True! Friend of mine had all 265 questions and passed. I don't know anyone who had 75 and failed, but I hear it happens. Just Relax!!
