Fall 2011 Western University of Health Sciences MSN-E

Published

Anyone applying to WesternU's MSN-E program? If so, do you know when they will start the interview process? What they look for in their applicants (gpa, extracurricular, etc)?

Current students--What were your stats like?

Any information would be helpful =)

Thanks in advance!

hey everyone!

i have good news! i got an email today from Daniell Mendoza saying that i was invited for an Early Acceptance Opportunity Day in lieu of attending a formal interview. :) he also provided interview dates in case i couldn't make it, which are the same dates that maxpower provided above. anyone else get an email like this?

Congrats meeeshelllie! Are you comfortable sharing your stats?

I'm planning to apply to Western next year, and am hoping I'll be competitive!

Congrats meeeshelllie! I haven't received an email yet but crossing my fingers too!

thanks maseca! :)

sure, i have a pre-req GPA of about 3.8 and science pre-req GPA of about 3.7 (not sure if i'm calculating it right, lol). and my cumulative undergrad GPA was 3.6. i've done a good chunk of clinical work for about 2-3 years and shadowed a FNP for about 7-8 months. i'm applying for the FNP track.

good luck with your application! i suggest starting on the personal statement as early as possible since i felt like that was what took me the longest and is one of the best ways to make yourself shine. :) have you went to an info session yet? what track are you interested in?

thanks rhardey! i got the email today around 12pm and my last name starts with a C if that may help. good luck, i'll be crossing my fingers for you all on here :)

congrats meeeshellie!!!! you are secured! do you remember when you submitted your application?

haven't received a email yet but im still hopefull!

thanks dche3! i'm not sure what to expect. it sounds like good news but i'm also trying to not get my hopes up :)

if i remember correctly i submitted the online portions on the day it was due (Oct 1st) and sent in the hard copy portions a few days before to arrive by Oct 1st. so in other words, i didn't submit my application early at all! lol.

thanks maseca! :)

Thanks for the info meeshellie!

I'm attending the info session next month, and have talked with the admissions counselors quite a bit. I'm aiming for the FNP track.

I'm just finishing up my BS in Public Health this year. My prereq GPA will be about an 3.8 (stupid B in statistics), and my last 60 units will be around 3.95. Unfortunately my cumulative GPA will barely be a 3.0 due to me not having my head screwed on straight when I was a teenager in college the first go-around. I have a good 3000+ volunteer hours that start back in 1989, which I hope will show a lifelong commitment to health care, despite the fact that I'm currently working as a paralegal.

I think I'll be a pretty strong candidate, I'm just really worried about my cumulative GPA (even though the admissions counselors have assured me that they only look at the last 60 units).

I would love to do some shadowing or more current volunteer work, but since I work full-time, am in school full-time and have husband and kid, there just isn't any time!

it sounds like you have a really great shot at getting in! although you don't have time to volunteer right now, those 3000+ hours under your belt should be more than enough and definitely show them that you are committed to working in the health care field. and im sure with your background in law you could probably contribute a lot of your life experiences into your work as a nurse.

wow, you have a TON on your plate right now! but western's program sounds perfect for you since most of it is distance-based. hope it all works out. :)

meeeshelllie - I agree on starting the personal statement as early as possible. Did you do any research on how to write one?

Maseca - We have very similiar situations! I'm not happy with my cumulative GPA because of of my first go-around. The admissions counselors assured me that they only look at the last 60 units as well. Did you address this issue in your personal statement?

rhardley73,

I'm so glad you got the same information from admissions!! That takes such a huge load off of my mind. I haven't applied yet, I am applying in the next cycle. But I will absolutely be addressing it in my personal statement, as it ties into my reasons for wanting to become an NP.

i just called the admissions office and they are still reviewing applications and they have yet to make a decision on mine. I hope that they will grant me an interview. I have an interview tomorrow at Rush University here in Chicago. Wish me luck!
