Hey everyone! I applied to UT houston and I'm waiting to hear if I got an interview. Applicants for years in the past started threads that everyone went to and kept everyone updated on information from the school, and it's nice to hear from possible (fingers crossed) other future classmates. If you don't mind, I'd also like to post our application info: GPA (science and overall), NET scores and experience.
My stats:
Overall GPA: 3.93
Science GPA: 3.75 (I think- UT link is down today :wink2:
NET: composite score was 88% (96 percentile)
I'm currently employed as a CNA in a hospital (only have about a month experience so far)
Goodluck and hopefully I get some replies!

yeah, my net reading was 64.
math....91
Composite...77
If you don't get an interview, then you don't get accepted. They use the interview as a way to see that you are serious about nursing. They also want to evaluate you on a personal level to see if they think you can make it through their nursing program. The interview is a big part of how they decide who gets in and who doesn't.
Yep. It's interesting how schools choose their students. I think it sends mixed messages to students who consider applying. I wonder how many students just go to "ratemyprofessor.com" to find out which teachers give easy A's. That way they can get a 4.0, and they don't have to work as hard for it. I choose teachers based on what works best for my schedule, but I want to be fair to myself. (I don't go to ratemyprofessor.com because I don't think it is beneficial to students). I choose my teachers based on what my other teachers recommend.
I went to orientation at TWU, and they said every year there are people who got in with a 4.0 that don't make it through the first semester. They said that many students don't remember important things they should have learned doing pre-reqs. They said every pre-req is important, and it will be tough to make it if you dont remember what you learn from your pre-reqs. They told us not to take blow-off classes if you really want to be a nurse.
I made a 67 on my reading so i guess i won't be getting an interview. It is pretty weird how they say one thing but then go about it doing another. I talked to one of their recruiters and they told me they don't really look at the net too much so long as you get a 50 or higher, then it'll be fine.
At my school the recruitors said the avg. GPA they accept is 3.25, and if you do OK on the NET it's fine....I heard it was the interview that was the most important thing.
???
Think about it though....if 1000 people heard that, and they all filled out an application thinking they would get accepted.....That's $30/app. So $30,000
For a school, that may not seem like much, but maybe it really is all about money. I don't want to sound like I'm being negative, or like I'm going on a rant. I just wish we heard more accurate information, so that we could know more about what to expect. I knew I was taking a big risk when I applied, but I thought I might be able to sway them with the interview. UT-Houston is smart about what they do, and I hope every student they accept will excel in the program. Good luck to everyone who is waiting for the results!!!
I have an interview for another program, so I am hoping the best for everybody. If it doesn't happen this time around, there is always next time. If you REALLY want to be a nurse, then you will realize that it is worth the struggle. Keep up the good work everyone!
haha i go to ratemyprofessors.com but i dont have a 4.0 i like that and i think it is beneficial to students in my opinion, its not because you want to get an easy teacher, i look at it to see peoples reactions about a teacher. ive been on there and students would be like dont take such and such she is too hard. her tests are hard. and i took her anyways because i wanted a challenge. so dont shoot down ratemyprof so much :)
I agree that it's wrong for the schools to tell you one thing and do another. I do remember that UT said that they didn't have a minimum score. (I don't think). Then all of a sudden once they get in the applicants, they say screw the gpa, we aren't taking anyone with a net test reading score of less than 70. The reason they told me that they don't look at it if it's below 70 is because the net test score in the past has reflected the student's being able to succeed in the program. i think it's crap though, if you study for school you'll pass. I don't think that taking 1 test which is an ENTRANCE exam will reflect your success in their program. Quite honestly, if I got an acceptance letter from them right now I don't even know if I'd accept it because the way they do things are screwed up. That's just my opinion. I think if we email them after the letters do go out if we didn't get accepted, wee should ask why, if they say because of your net test score then we need to tell them that they are wrong for changing what they said. Maybe if they have alot of people complaining, next semester they will set in stone what they want.
Yeah ratemyprofessor isn't all bad. I think some people use it for the wrong reasons, but taking a good teacher who offers a challenge is a smart idea!!
(i knew a couple people who used it for the wrong reasons, and they had higher GPA's than me.) It made me sad because I was the one helping THEM when they were struggling with the more difficult pre-reqs. haha.
Of course, I have come to accept that nursing school is really competitive. People who are good "self-teachers" may prefer ratemyprofessor because they want the "A", but can teach themselves more details from the book when necessary.
I do hope UT-Houston becomes more straightforward with what they expect on applications. My composite NET was 77, and that is what they said they looked at. Over 70....I guess it has to be for MATH and READING. My counselor warned me about it before I applied, but I never saw it on the website. I took a chance. haha. Oh well.

Well. my net test reading score was a 67 and they said the reason they idn't pick me for an interview is they usually don't call in people foran interview if their reading score is below 70.
