Fall 2015 University of Minnesota Master of Nursing Applicants

Published

I applied for entry to the fall 2015 Master of Nursing at the UM, anyone else? Does anyone know about timeline for finding out about interviews and/or final decisions?

I'm sure that a group will be made sometime soon, there are one's for the past cohorts already. I feel like the school of nursing will make it, but don't quote me on that.

As far as housing goes it depends on what your definition of expensive is. You can live through University housing in either dorms or apartment style housing, but those options are definitely the most expensive.

-A lot of the conveniently located apartments are luxury style apartments and if you have your own room will probably range from 800-1200 (I personally think that's super expensive) depending on how many apartment mates you have. Sharing a bedroom in these apartments can knock it down to less than 600 easy.

-The more reasonably priced apartments are difficult to find, but if you go to Craigslist and look up housing near the University of Minnesota you can find some reasonably priced ones where having your own bedroom can be about 500-700.

-I would say that living in a house is the cheapest option (in terms of quality to cost) and you can find houses via Craigslist again.

In terms of accessibility it is extremely easy to to use public transportation to get campus. There's a light rail that's still pretty new, but it has stops in the middle of campus. There's even a stop in front of Moos Tower (where most of our classes will likely be). It's also fairly easy to find a bus into campus once you know which ones go by you. Since we are students we'll be able to purchase a U-Pass which lets you use the light rail and buses for about $100 a semester (I'd recommend it unless you live super close to campus).

In terms of safety, it's kind of hard to explain. It's like any large residential area where more crimes happen away from main roads in the deep parts of neighborhoods. Break-ins are pretty rare, but during the Summer and Fall I'd probably hear about a mugging at least once a week thanks to the crime alert system that tells the student body about crimes on or around campus. I live fairly deep in one of the neighborhoods, but I'm only about 1 block away from a bus stop and generally don't walk alone at night so I've never had an issue. I have friends that live in crime hot spots that also haven't had any issues, really just use common sense when it comes to being alone at night.

Sorry if I was vague, anybody can send me a message if they have questions or want some more clarification. My name is Eric and I'm finishing my last semester at Minnesota and as long as everything goes accordingly I'll be in the Fall 2015 cohort.

Oh wait I just realized I don't have access to the private message system on here since I'm not that active on the site. Feel free to send me an email at [email protected] if anybody has questions about the campus or anything like that and I'll do my best to help.

I completed the intent to enroll form and payment right away. No one else has received the email with student ID and advisor assignment yet, correct??

Me too but I haven't either. Maybe they do it after the 15th?

Did they tell you you didn't get into the direct-entry nurse-midwifery DNP program? I got into the MN program, too (Yeah!) and called when I didn't see/hear anything about the DNP. I was told that DNP decisions are still in progress and may go out next week.

I have a ton of heart for those of you who don't get in. It takes a lot of work to get to the point where you can even apply. Please don't give up! Lots of good ideas here so far, and I agree that it is as likely about the mix of applicants as it is about the individual applicants. I was told in my interview that the the quality of the applicant pool was very high.

This is really helpful, thanks! I assumed I didn't get into the DNP part; I didn't actually ask about it (our house is in the middle of flooring replacement and with things so chaotic I haven't been sending many extraneous emails). So I guess I can stay nervous a bit longer. :p Just to double check--were you also told that we can reapply for the DNP program for nurse-midwifery during the last term of our MN program? I thought that that was the case (though obviously we wouldn't have the required nursing experience until after we completed our MN degrees), but then I started second-guessing my memories of the interview. I'm just trying to get a sense of my options.

I sent my acceptance in and paid the deposit but haven't heard anything else. I'm hoping we can register for classes soon, as my family lives over an hour away, and so I will probably be spending 1-2 nights every week down in the Cities during the program. Being able to register for some specific sections over others could make my life somewhat easier in that respect. I'm also hoping I can keep my original student ID number and internet ID; it's a small thing, but they've been with me since my days as an undergrad, and I'm using them currently because I am taking the last prerequisites for the MN program this term at the U of MN (optimistically, as I wasn't sure when I registered for them if I would be accepted or not).

As far as housing--I will hopefully be staying with friends/family for the nights I have to be in the area, but may also be up for working something out with another student, depending on how our final schedules shake out.

I didn't ask that. However, the deadline for the DNP when you're not applying direct admit is Feb 15 (Nov 15 for priority), and the requirement is that you have a year of clinical nursing experience before the beginning of year 2 of the DNP program. So I don't see why we wouldn't be able to apply the Feb after we finish?...

BTW, I did both undergrad and grad coursework at the U and my ID stayed the same. Old pal has been with me since 1996. I'm sure you'll get to keep your student ID!

Thanks for the insight! I'm taking my last prerequisites at the U of MN this semester and my ID persisted, so I'm assuming it will continue on as well.

I should have written down what was said about applying to the CNM DNP program straight out of the MN program, but I thought the implication was that we could apply during the second fall term of the MN program, essentially following the same timeline that the directly admitted students would be (with the same amount of time, therefore, to get our work experience in prior to DNP clinical placements). There may be a distinction between being able to apply for the early deadline vs. the regular one since we won't have passed the NCLEX yet, however. In any case, I'll take it as it comes; I'm focusing on being successful in the MN program and am looking forward to getting details and preparing myself to begin this fall. Summer is going to fly by.

Well, emails are out for the DNP for nurse-midwifery program as well. Seems I have a long and promising future at the U of MN! I'm very excited, and a bit intimidated.

Congrats! I was waitlisted for the DNP. I'm pretty bummed. Any idea how many direct admit people they took?

I'm so sorry, maswrites. I was hoping for good news from you as well. :( I'd talked myself into thinking I wouldn't get a spot because I knew there were a lot of very promising direct admit applicants (according to my interviewer), and though I know I have a lot of passion and drive, I am sure everyone who applied did, and I wasn't sure I did well enough in my interview to gain an edge. I'm very humbled and excited right now.

I'm not sure how many were accepted to the DNP, but I heard in the info session and elsewhere that they only take a few students this way because they want to have room for applicants who will be applying for that cycle as well. I hope you are going to reapply!

I got waitlisted for the direct entry DNP as well, but that did not surprise me by ANY means. I even mentioned in my interview that I wasn't 100% sure that I wanted to go straight through because of my husbands military situation so I think I ran my own foot over there if there are only a few spots offered. :) I am still just so thrilled to be joining the MN class that it didn't really phase me when I got the notification.

I was admitted through to the DNP midwifery program as well, but I will be giving up my spot as I have decided to attend Emory University instead. Sounds like it would be a wonderful program but I am looking forward to getting into practice as a midwife in 2.5 years instead 5 years. Hopefully someone on the waitlist will hear back from admissions soon!
