Fall 2015 University of Minnesota Master of Nursing Applicants
Great news! I forgot that I have my UMN email set up to come directly to my computer, so I don't usually distinguish between University email and standard email.

I feel much better now about all of this--the scheduler has been nothing but responsive to my emails and kind and helpful. Whew. I am hoping that my issues have mostly stemmed from emails going to the catchall address for the SoN (even though that's the one we are given in the checklist for sending documentation). I'm feeling more hopeful now at least, and less panicked. Evyviggy, I just completed all my documentation earlier this week, so maybe my registration email was linked to that? I assumed we were all getting our schedules at the same time, but obviously that isn't the case after all. I had all my immunization paperwork complete at least 4-6 weeks ago, took CPR in late May, did all of the online trainings, sent my transcript for the last two prerequisites I had completed in the spring, signed the student conduct form and the physical form as soon as I'd had my yearly checkup, and forwarded everything outstanding as of this week. I think all I still have to do is order scrubs and deal with financial aid once we know what loans/etc. we are eligible for.

I got my registration info email today. I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed at how poor communication has been, and the way our schedules were determined. All the emails I have sent with my paperwork from the checklist have gone completely unacknowledged, and I am concerned at how late we will be notified of financial aid awards. I am commuting about 1.25 hours out from the U of MN, as it makes no sense for me to move my young family away from our support network for the duration of the MN program, and was told that they would try to take this into consideration for registration and that my request would be forwarded to the scheduler. Even realizing we have very limited options, I was put into, quite literally, the worst class sections possible for someone not living in the Metro area. *sigh* Obviously we will deal with it, and make things work somehow, but is anyone else feeling frustrated with how communication has been with the admissions and advising staff so far?

It took a couple of weeks for mine to update as well, but it did eventually get put into the system and now I'm not getting reminder emails any longer (thank goodness).

I got email confirmation that we will be getting checklist/welcome info after the upgrade is complete as well, so hopefully next week. Good to know about orientation, thanks!

Hmm. I wonder as well. I do wish I'd gotten email confirmation of the DNP intention to enroll letter, and I wish they were being a bit more forthcoming about how and when we can register for classes. I hope we have some control in the cases where there are different sections for labs, because it will make a big difference for me commuting from over an hour away. Perhaps an email is in order.

I haven't gotten a welcome email or confirmation of my intent to enroll to the DNP program in 2017, but my student record now states that my program of study is nursing and I've gotten two emails requiring that I update my immunization and TB test results (all of which should be done next week hopefully, though the wording in the emails was rather alarming since it's an automated system saying "DUE NOW"). The U is in the middle of a big software upgrade that means some systems are down, so maybe that's affecting notifications for this program? I haven't gotten any snail mail letters either, but I've been trying to get my paperwork in order as far as I am able.

Congratulations, Mirounga! I only applied to the U of MN this cycle so there's no real decision for me to make (other than go/no go), but I certainly appreciate the appeal of getting to practice sooner. In the past I toured Yale's GEPN program and looked into OHSU as well. I have gone back and forth on whether going straight to the DNP makes sense (rather than a program that would give me the master's level specialization), but I think I'll be glad I went this route, and everything is falling into place nicely, so I feel generally good about things.

I'm so sorry, maswrites. I was hoping for good news from you as well. I'd talked myself into thinking I wouldn't get a spot because I knew there were a lot of very promising direct admit applicants (according to my interviewer), and though I know I have a lot of passion and drive, I am sure everyone who applied did, and I wasn't sure I did well enough in my interview to gain an edge. I'm very humbled and excited right now. I'm not sure how many were accepted to the DNP, but I heard in the info session and elsewhere that they only take a few students this way because they want to have room for applicants who will be applying for that cycle as well. I hope you are going to reapply!

Well, emails are out for the DNP for nurse-midwifery program as well. Seems I have a long and promising future at the U of MN! I'm very excited, and a bit intimidated.

Thanks for the insight! I'm taking my last prerequisites at the U of MN this semester and my ID persisted, so I'm assuming it will continue on as well. I should have written down what was said about applying to the CNM DNP program straight out of the MN program, but I thought the implication was that we could apply during the second fall term of the MN program, essentially following the same timeline that the directly admitted students would be (with the same amount of time, therefore, to get our work experience in prior to DNP clinical placements). There may be a distinction between being able to apply for the early deadline vs. the regular one since we won't have passed the NCLEX yet, however. In any case, I'll take it as it comes; I'm focusing on being successful in the MN program and am looking forward to getting details and preparing myself to begin this fall. Summer is going to fly by.

This is really helpful, thanks! I assumed I didn't get into the DNP part; I didn't actually ask about it (our house is in the middle of flooring replacement and with things so chaotic I haven't been sending many extraneous emails). So I guess I can stay nervous a bit longer. Just to double check--were you also told that we can reapply for the DNP program for nurse-midwifery during the last term of our MN program? I thought that that was the case (though obviously we wouldn't have the required nursing experience until after we completed our MN degrees), but then I started second-guessing my memories of the interview. I'm just trying to get a sense of my options. I sent my acceptance in and paid the deposit but haven't heard anything else. I'm hoping we can register for classes soon, as my family lives over an hour away, and so I will probably be spending 1-2 nights every week down in the Cities during the program. Being able to register for some specific sections over others could make my life somewhat easier in that respect. I'm also hoping I can keep my original student ID number and internet ID; it's a small thing, but they've been with me since my days as an undergrad, and I'm using them currently because I am taking the last prerequisites for the MN program this term at the U of MN (optimistically, as I wasn't sure when I registered for them if I would be accepted or not). As far as housing--I will hopefully be staying with friends/family for the nights I have to be in the area, but may also be up for working something out with another student, depending on how our final schedules shake out.

Seconding everything evyviggy said. I, too, think it likely has more to do with the group of people they are trying to put together than with a lack of ability or experience on the part of the applicants who have gotten to this point. Keep your spirits up and keep trying! If you would like someone to read your personal statement for another application cycle I would be happy to help.

I was also accepted to the MN program, though it looks like not for the subsequent DNP for nurse-midwifery program (that doesn't necessarily surprise me, as the interviewer said they can only take a couple of people for the direct path and there were a lot of highly qualified applicants; I'll likely reapply during the next appropriate cycle). Honestly, I think that only small differences separate us all at this point; maybe it's experience, maybe it's the quality and source of our recommendation letters, maybe a tiny difference in GPA or GRE score, maybe a slight edge in interviewing skills, but I hope that those of you who were not accepted get in off of the waitlist or keep trying and are successful next cycle if you do not go somewhere else. AlexisLehrer, based on your stats I would have expected you to get in. I'm sorry to hear you weren't accepted! I don't have my figures in front of me right now but I have less direct nursing experience than you do (and also have two children). I have some healthcare experience in a non-nursing role, and my prerequisite GPA and overall GPA are a bit higher (4.0 for prerequisites so far, with the last two in progress this term), but honestly I think it's hard to know exactly what the admissions committee was looking for and it's very possible that you would be successful if you reapply. All of us who got interviews already were in the top 40-50%, I figure. Congratulations to the successful applicants, and hugs and sympathy to those with less favorable outcomes.

I was told by my interviewer today that we should hear by the end of March or early April. I'm betting on early April, myself. I always feel as though there was so much I didn't get to say, and things that didn't go as well as I'd hoped on the interview, but at least it's over and I think on balance it went fine. Sounds like there are a ton of great applicants this year and I'm nervous, but hopeful. I really liked the faculty member I got to speak to. How is everyone else feeling?
