Fall 2010 UCLA MECN applicants share your comments/concerns

Just a reminder for whoever interested in applying to fall 2010 UCLA MECN program, the deadline is Nov. 2, 2009.

Let me share my story. I mailed my application to UCLA SON two weeks ago via certified mail. I thought I could track my package on USPS website. However, it only showed that the postal service received my package and there was no more further info regarding the arrival at UCLA. I panicked and called the USPS three times with three different phone #s. And I went to my local postal office to recall my package. NO LUCK. They told me to call PO with 90095 zip code. Finally, I talked to the right person who worked in the Village postal in Westwood. He said UCLA had its own postal service system and it did not conform any kind of mailing. I was sort of relief that knowing my package was with UCLA SON. This is my first time applying to MECN. Anyone who is re-applicant out here, do you mind share your previous experience with UCLA-MECN?

Still no letter! Ahhhhh!

Does anyone know what the cohort number will be after all acceptances/declines are tallied? 60?

It says 50 on their website. Not sure if that's still accurate.

Thanks, maybe they're adding ... or anticipating that 10 or so decline. Either way, I suspect it'll be right around 50 or 60. Thanks.

60 people were offered places.

If you haven't heard, you still might be on the waitlist. I think some people got e-mails that they were waitlisted only because they e-mailed UCLA to find out (like me!).

For those of you guys on the waitlist who are planning to go to other schools, congratulations! Are you contacting UCLA to remove yourself from the list?

I applied last year to the MECN program and was #23 on the waitlist. I ended up not getting in. I'm not sure how many people typically get in off the alternate list. I applied again this year and was rejected. But I did get accepted to Columbia, Boston College, and Yale. So for those of you who didn't get in, don't be too discouraged, there are other schools out there who will want you! UCLA is competitive, and I'm sure many qualified applicants were not accepted. For those who will be accepting or declining offers from UCLA, would you mind sharing what the deadline is for the deposit/intent to register?

Also, is anyone planning to fulfill the Epidemiology prerequisite this summer? If so, where are you taking the course? I am on the waitlist and will most likely register to take it at UCLA.

Im trying to figure out where to take Epidemiology as well. Im up in San Francisco and cant come down to take the class at UCLA. I would like to take it as an online version because that would make my life easier. Do you know of any online classes? Either that or Ill have to take it at UC Berkeley Extenstion. Do you live in LA? If not, when are you planning on moving down there?

Anyone know of an epidemiology class online?

Hi SRL- UCLA asked to be notified by April 16th.

They do offer an Epidemiology class over the summer for students starting the MECN program in the fall. They haven't told us the days/times of the class yet, but hopefully we'll know soon.

Does anyone have suggestions as to where I can take a Chem class in LA over the summer? I still need to take Chem, and am having a hard time with the community colleges (they fill up so fast!)

I took chem at Santa Monica college. Really good school.

The epidemiology professor at UCLA offers online option. I took his class last summer, although not online. So, I'm not exactly sure how the online class works, but check out his class website for more info:
