Hi all,
So I am starting nursing school this fall, and am finding that I feel like I am behind. HAHA! So I was wondering how you are preparing for school? What have you bought so far? Books? Equipment? Anything you would like to share.
I will start:
Stethoscope (Cardiology III, Littmann)
Penlight (Just bought yesterday, Streamlight Stylus) and a Free Penlight pen from work (Back-up)
Nurse Mates Shoes for clinical
Tabers Dictionary (Required book)
An AWESOME!! Planner
Math for Meds |(Required book)
Davis Drug Guide for Nurses (Reqired book)
Mosby's Pharmacology Memory Note Cards
Mosby's Pathophysiology Memory Note Cards
2-3" Binders one for A&P 1&2 and one for the rest hahaha
Pens (Easy one, I am a pen Klepto, really easy! )
Extra this loose leaf paper
Normally I love the spiral bound paper, but was advised that I need loose leaf paper, because we get so many handouts, it is impossible to keep organized. The main reason I hated loose leaf paper was because I always write so hard, and I tend to see my writing on the other side. This was so annoying, and wasted too much paper writing single sided. A friend of mine introduced me to heavy loose leaf paper. The absolute best paper ever, even sharpies don't show through.
So this is my freak-out so far hahaha. How are you coming along?
Wow, you guys are on it!!I'm not that well-prepared yet. (LAME! I know.)
I've set up my study space, and have been stocking up on things like printer paper, ink, notebooks, binders, dividers, page flags, post-its (LOVE post-its!), sharpies, etc. And I know it sounds crazy, but I've been stocking up on food and stuff for my family. The pantry and freezer are full (even made some freezer meals) because I'm expecting to spend a lot of time studying.
The big stuff is all yet to come for me. I have financial aid pending, so I have to wait a few more weeks to get my books and lab kit. I only have two weeks left at my job, so when I'm done with it, I'll have some free time to get shoes, uniforms, stethescope, and either a netbook or iPad. In our book kits, we get electronic versions of our books to load onto iThings or computers. I have quite a PTO bank from my job that will pay out in a few weeks, which is good since we don't use credit cards.
Something I want sooner rather than later is some kind of backpack or messenger bag. I don't think I'll be toting around enough books to need a rolling one (with the e-textbooks and all), but it still has to hold a substantial amount of stuff. Any suggestions?
I love hearing about everyone else's plans.
I would think this a really good preparation for school. I love the idea of stocking up!!! You seem so organized!!
Great topic! I have been slowly, one by one, adding to my box of supplies for school and yet I still have alot of stuff left I still need.
Here is what I have
Stethoscope - littman cardiology III in plum :-)
Bandage scissors
Pocket organizer
Hemostats
BP cuff - not required but I wanted one for home use and practice
Pharmacology book, the only textbook I bought so for...found a good deal on it
Klogs shoes (naples style, white)
Rolling book bag - I got a zuca and I LOVE it
Here is what I still need
My uniform - will probably get two of the pants, two of the tops and 1 lab coat?
Lots of white undergarments since the uniform is white. (seriously, who thought that color would be a good idea?)
The rest of my textbooks
A planner
Pen light
Watch
Small tote bag for clinicals
Clipboard w/ calc and storage
Notebooks
Printer Ink
mini stapler
LIVESCRIBE 4GB Echo PEN!! I can't wait to get this. Will be ordering before school...just hoping one goes on sale somewhere in the next month. Anyone else getting a recorder to record lectures??
I am getting sooo excited!!
I love my fob watch. I like it for vitals, if you get one make sure the second hand glows in the dark. When I have to hold a baby I don't have to worry about scratching and when I scrub a section I don't have to fuss with it. I like having my hands jewelry free when I wash them.
Thanks for that. This will sound weird but when you're counting respirations do you have trouble seeing the watch and watching the patient. When I did CNA clinicals I learned to do vitals with a wrist watch. I'm just trying to sort out the logistics. Where do you pin/ clip it.
I have all my books mostly from Amazon, saved $200-300! Case of printer paper, back up toner, tons of notebooks, pens, pencils, folders, uniforms is ordered suprizingly inexpensive, shoes w/ inserts, pen light, stethoscope, LL Bean rolling backpack, scissors, B/P cuff, watch, non flashy hair ties, recorder, just got a snap and planner today. Second orientation in three weeks, maybe more then. Need to figure out a food item for family day? Vodka?
tag2007, just a suggestion: to be safe, try flesh colored underwear instead of white. White under white might stand out...like on the person I saw at the grocery store a few days ago. Also, beware of polka dots, stripes, etc. as the print may show through your pants. A scrub top that covers your bum should give you an additional layer of protection. Only problem is, none of these suggestions will save a female from a "that time of the month" accident (sorry...TMI)
I hear you on the white. I hope to get hired somewhere we can choose what we want to wear. White really sucks Today I ordered a back up stethoscope, an ultra scope, they just happened to have one with my initial on it for less then 1/2 the price...
I bought happy face clip watches from Ebay for cheap, also a cheap credit card sized calculator.
