Fall 2011 students, what do you have so far?

Published

Hi all,

So I am starting nursing school this fall, and am finding that I feel like I am behind. HAHA! So I was wondering how you are preparing for school? What have you bought so far? Books? Equipment? Anything you would like to share.

I will start:

Stethoscope (Cardiology III, Littmann)

Penlight (Just bought yesterday, Streamlight Stylus) and a Free Penlight pen from work (Back-up)

Nurse Mates Shoes for clinical

Tabers Dictionary (Required book)

An AWESOME!! Planner

Math for Meds |(Required book)

Davis Drug Guide for Nurses (Reqired book)

Mosby's Pharmacology Memory Note Cards

Mosby's Pathophysiology Memory Note Cards

2-3" Binders one for A&P 1&2 and one for the rest hahaha

Pens (Easy one, I am a pen Klepto, really easy! :lol2:)

Extra this loose leaf paper

Normally I love the spiral bound paper, but was advised that I need loose leaf paper, because we get so many handouts, it is impossible to keep organized. The main reason I hated loose leaf paper was because I always write so hard, and I tend to see my writing on the other side. This was so annoying, and wasted too much paper writing single sided. A friend of mine introduced me to heavy loose leaf paper. The absolute best paper ever, even sharpies don't show through.

So this is my freak-out so far hahaha. How are you coming along?

Critical Care is by informed publishing. Its great for CCU/ICU or emergency room rotations and just overall learning. There so much information and I learn something from it or epocretes everyday. haha No joke. =)

I will get those one! Thanks!

Specializes in i can read really good lol.

i have ordered my uniforms with patches and name pin( still waiting for them to ship it out) , i ordered all my required text books except for a few , i already have a bp cuff and stethoscope form when i took my cna course gonna see if they will do. I still need shoes and all the supplies like paper pens , highlighters, ect. im going to wait until i get my financial aid because i am maxing out my cc so yeah that all for now. still have a lot more stuff to get , and tons of money to spend.

I'm very type A so I have been in "gathering" mode since I got my acceptance letter in April. Anyway, I have . . .

2 sets of scrubs - still need to find a good tank to wear under them. I can't stand to be bare under a scrub top since I got puked on in CNA clinical.

I have shoes on the way. I ordered a pair of genoa by klogs USA - look like dansko's but they come in wide.

My steth is also on the way (navy blue Littmann classic se) along with bandage scissors, pen light, hemostats, and bp cuff.

I have about half of my books - fundamentals, pharm (got the e version for iPad via vital source bookshelf), calculation book for pharm, care plan book (kindle version for iPad), Taylor's videos, med term book and cd's. I still don't have the book list for a couple of classes though.

I also bought a clipboard with calculator, four or five mead flex notebooks (love those), paper, printer ink, pens, highlighters ( got the mega pack from Costco), and a few other little things.

I still have to find a watch and am debating between a cheap water proof from Walmart or a lapel watch I saw online. Just don't know how taking vitals would go with the lapel watch.

I'm such a nerd . . . I LOVE school supplies:)

I have ordered ALL of my books including Davis' drug guide, 2 sets of uniforms, beige underwear sadly to go under the white unforms =[ , a slew of pens, pencils and highlighers, mini spiral notebooks 2 keep in my pocket during clinicals, stethoscope, water proof watch, and a giant tote bag to lug it all with me. all i need is a pair of comfy shoes and a few binders and im ready to go =]

I've been gathering my supplies over the past few weeks.

So far I have:

printer paper and ink

docket legal pad with holes pre-punched

3 ring binder with 5 color folders and tabs to separate each test's material

3 ring hole-punch (fits in notebook) for handouts

index cards w/ box

highlighters

pens (black, red, blue)

sharpie (to label my things)

stapler

clinical clipboard w/ calculator and inside has extra pens and paper

planner (all filled out with class schedule for the fall and school closings)

clinical tote bag

stethoscope (cheap one, hope to get a littman from santa)

bp cuff

bandage scissors

penlight

shoes (I got shape-ups becuase I love my "non-white" pair)

socks (ones that breathe!)

hair ties

- I think that's it -

Stuff still needed:

books (orientation tomorrow)

pay tuition for classes and register (tomorrow)

scrubs (don't know color yet)

And I think that's all for me. Gotta finish my Hep. B shots soon!

hope you all are doing well. My piggy bank is definitely BROKE now, but I knew this was going to happen. Praying for financial scholarship for next year!

sandanrn

man i am behind!!! haha i only have gotten a few things like essential school supplies:

binders

paper

index cards

ink & printer paper

pen, pencils etc

stick flags

my clinical shoes- reebok easy tone, the MOST comfortable shoes

khakis & ordered polos for uni forms but ughh still need my scrubs medical supplies & books

Steth (Littman Classic II SE)

Scissors

Penlights

Uniform scrubs are ordered and will be delivered first week of school

I have to get my books soon - I was trying to wait for my financial aid to come through but I think I'm going to have to charge my books and pay it off once the aid comes through as I start in 46 days!!!

Ohh yeah, and 1 last piece of advise, I always make sure I carry carmex, burts bees wax, or vicks nasal inhaler when I am in clinicals. I do not fear any body fluid that comes out of my patient, heck I signed up for that, but I find that when I know its going to be a big stinker, these help me get through it. I just use my finger (clean of course) to put a little at the base of my nostrils and BAM, I smell carmex, burts bees wax or vicks nasal spray instead of that wonderful C-Dif, or tube feeding bowel movements, or better yet, lady partsl birth smells during my OB rotation.

Hahh, one of my friend was working and almost fell over because she put the strongest 'vicks' under her nostrils, but she said it was better than the other smell

I'm the same way. I highly recommend the Fruit of Loom or Hanes mens undershirts or tanks!! I hate not wearing anything under scrubs, and the mens shirts are long enough that you can tuck them into the pants (unlike women's undershirts) and when you bend over you don't have to worry about the dreaded plumbers crack from the scrubs slipping down.

Ahh I feel so behind! I haven't even scheduled my classes yet..I got accepted just last week. Once I get classes schedule, I'll start gathering what I need. I'm going to see what all financial aid covers too. BTW, save all your receipts! It's all work.school related, tax deductions :)

Would love to get some friends/contacts on the board, especially those starting out like me. Always nice for help either way ;)
