Fall 2016 Nursing School Applicant Support Group

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Thought it might be nice to have a general thread where everyone can share their journey without needing to create a specific thread for their school! I would love to hear from others going through this same process.... and if anyone has any other questions to add, let me know and I'll add them to the OP. That said.... share away!

Tell us about the school you're applying to.

I'm currently applying to a college of nursing through a hospital in my area. It's got a great NCLEX pass rate and a good retention rate as well.

What pre-reqs are you completing?

Working to complete A&P 1 and 2 prior to submitting my application.

What's the application deadline? When will you hear if you've been accepted or not?

Mine is January 1st. I'll know my status with the program by March.

Where are you in life right now - high school, college, going back to school? Working? Kids?

I'm 5 years post-A.D. and am working full time. I have a child in grade school.

How are you feeling about it all?

I'm feeling pretty confident. The school I'm looking at says a competitive candidate will have at least a B (3.0) average and I have a 3.8. Hoping to bring it up as I'm working to get A's on A&P. It's a wee bit overwhelming, though - it's hard to work 9-5, come home, study for 2 hours, stop for an hour to see my kid and put her to bed, and then head right back to it till 11 at night. Rinse and repeat. I know that's what school will be like, though, so I'm trying to get used to it!

Are you doing anything to get ready aside from taking courses (such as volunteering or shadowing a nurse)? How do you like it?

I'm going to be volunteering at a rehabilitation facility - my first day should be this Saturday. I'm nervous but looking forward to it and I'll probably pop in here afterwards to share my thoughts!

I am applying to a community college ADN program for fall 2016 , I am a mother of 2 working as a phlebotomist at the moment which gives me points when I get ready to apply. After the spring semester I will have all mypreqs done except a&p 1&2 I have mostly A's and 2 b'S my gpa is 3.8 I have took the teas yet but i plan to in march . I'm really nervous about applying because I'm afraid to get turned down because I don't have my bios . The school I go to has a very small student body maybe 1,000 to 2,000 students and they accept 40 students each fall . I spoke to 3 people who deal with the applications and was told I didn't need to have all prereqs done to be accepted and that most of the students who are accepted take the rest of their prereqs while in the program. But they require you to be eligible to take bio 168 math 143 & English 111 I completed English with a B and will be able to take math 143 in the spring . But I won't be able to take bio 168 until the summer. I was told they like to fill all 40 spots and if their are less qualified applicants they will allow other applicants who may not be eligible for those three classes but they will be able to take them in the program . I'm really hoping I get in ! I'm nervous but I'm going to apply anyway.. I'm hoping they won't turn me down for being 1 class shy of the requirements and make me wait a whole year.

What an awesome thread!

Tell us about the school you're applying to.

I plan on applying to the ADN program at my local community college. I am actually shooting to get into the Spring 2016 class but if I end up having to wait then I will be in the Fall 2016.

What pre-reqs are you completing?

I am completing my last prereq A&P II this fall semester. I am finding that I am enjoying this course more than A&P I.

What's the application deadline? When will you hear if you've been accepted or not?

The deadline for Spring acceptance is end of Sept. We will be notified by Nov. For our Fall 2016 acceptance it will be late Feb. We will be notified by April.

Where are you in life right now - high school, college, going back to school? Working? Kids?

Currently I have been working full time as an MA for last three years, while taking my prerequisites. I think that it has actually helped me out a lot by working and going to school because it makes me more accountable for my studying.

How are you feeling about it all?

I have been working so hard for what seems like a century to get to this point, I am so anxious! The countdown is killing me! :crying2:

But I feel confident that my application is competitive enough to be considered for acceptance.

Fingers crossed!

Are you doing anything to get ready aside from taking courses (such as volunteering or shadowing a nurse)? How do you like it?

I get a lot of experience from my current job. I get to work with nurses all day, it gives me a good idea of what it will be like to be a clinic nurse.

There is also a slight possibility that I will not be working while I am in nursing school so I have been saving money to prepare.

Good luck everyone!

Also check out my weekly threads and share your weekly stories!

I have applied to Grand Valley State University's January '16 start date for the BSN program.

What pre-reqs are you completing?

This term, I'm taking Human Genetics, Orgo and Bio Chem, Pathophysiology and Lifetime Developmental Psych.

What's the application deadline? When will you hear if you've been accepted or not?

Application deadline was August 1, we will know the first week of October if we get an interview in mid-October and will know in December if we got a seat.

Where are you in life right now - high school, college, going back to school? Working? Kids?

I am 35 so...I finished high school in 1998, went right to college and got an associates in Business and Hospitality Management. I never got the chance to use it as I was always kept in the entry level positions. I started college again in 2012 and got 3 associates degrees last year. I am married, working part time and have 3 kids (my oldest son thrives with autism, my step daughter is a senior in high school and my youngest is in 3rd grade).

How are you feeling about it all?

Not bad, actually. I'm nervous because I went from a 3.9 in CC to a 3.3 now due to taking care of my then ill, now passed grandma who lived 2 hours away then having my son hospitalized for 2 weeks. At least I have a valid explanation for a GPA drop like that.

Are you doing anything to get ready aside from taking courses (such as volunteering or shadowing a nurse)? How do you like it?

I have volunteered at a hospital, although not recently. I work in a psychiatric and medical care facility where we do med passes, assess medically all the time for on-call/guardians/appointments. We are always on the lookout.

Tell us about the school you're applying to.

I'll be applying to Wright State University's BSN prelicensure program

What pre-reqs are you completing?

This semester I have A&PI, O Chem, & Gen Psych. Next Semester A&PII, Statistics, & Psych Across the Lifespan.

What's the application deadline? When will you hear if you've been accepted or not?

May 15. I'd hear back in July.

Where are you in life right now - high school, college, going back to school? Working? Kids?

I just finished my associates in Liberal Arts in May. 27 years old, newly divorces single mom of 3 kids 7 and under. I work as a waitress and own an eco-friendly baby boutique.

How are you feeling about it all?

Excited and anxious! I've kicked butt in school thus far and am extremely motivated to do well.

Are you doing anything to get ready aside from taking courses (such as volunteering or shadowing a nurse)? How do you like it?

Not currently no

I will be applying to a variety of school however my top two would be the local community colleges in my area STCC and HCC both have a great program leaning more towards STCC cause thats where I have been after High School

I have completed A&P 1 and 2 over the summer got a 4.0 in both currently working on Microbiology and will probably do Human Growth and Development next as well as sign up for the TEAS exam

My dead line is February 1st and acceptance letters are mailed out first week of April

I currently work part time as a bank teller and hold a degree in Criminal Justice so i knocked out a lot of gen ed requirements

I feel very excited nursing was something i wanted to do way prior when i was 19 im 22 now, but I let my fear of social anxiety and public speaking take over me, not happening anymore. My grades are high I just hope that I will be able to project that into more effective oral communication.

I am currently applying to a few different hospitals in my area for some kind of job service patient transport anything really just to get used to that environment. I have three good friends who are nurses one of which works in a Cardiac ICU I will be shadowing him very soon, the others work at a Rehabilitation Hospital and they hate it they want out.

Tell us about the school you're applying to.

I'm enrolled at TCC (a community college in my city) and planning on entering their school of nursing in the Spring.

What pre-reqs are you completing?

This semester I'm taking NAS 2, Child Psychology and a few GE classes. I have a few prereqs I have to take in order to enter the nursing program, but I'm optimistic regardless :)

What's the application deadline? When will you hear if you've been accepted or not?

The deadline is in July for the Spring Program

Where are you in life right now - high school, college, going back to school? Working? Kids?

I am a single mom of 2 girls, returning to school for the first time after 10 years

How are you feeling about it all?

I am honestly feeling very positive and excited right now, even though I have a long and hard road ahead of me. I have been wanting to go back to school for a very long time, and I feel like now is the time in my life when I finally can, especially since my youngest daughter is in preschool now :)

Are you doing anything to get ready aside from taking courses (such as volunteering or shadowing a nurse)?

Nothing right now, although I would like to shadow a nurse, will definitely look into that one :)

Cheers and good luck to us all!

Tell us about the school you're applying to.

I've only applied to Oregon Health & Science University's BSN program. There's only two programs local, and the scholarship through my work won't pay for the ADN program offered by the community college.

What pre-reqs are you completing?

I've finished all of my pre-reqs, I'm currently finishing my last humanities class to complete an Associates of Arts to transfer to a university, which I hope to start this spring quarter to start completing the non-nursing requirements for the BSN program. I've got some credits in psychology already, and the requirement for a minor in psychology is 16 credits more of upper division psych, so if I take two psych classes this spring and summer I'll have the non-nursing requirements for the BSN program taken care of as well as the requirements for a minor in psychology.

What's the application deadline? When will you hear if you've been accepted or not?

Applications close next week on the 15th; interviews for the campus I applied to are in mid-April. From threads I read regarding previous years, acceptance letters go out pretty shortly after the interviews.

Where are you in life right now - high school, college, going back to school? Working? Kids?

I graduated high school in 2002 and joined the Army. I served in the Army until 2014 when I started working at the Department of Veterans Affairs as a psychiatric nursing assistant. I've got two children, a six year old daughter and a four year old son.

How are you feeling about it all?

Uncertain for sure. The rational part of my mind tells me I'm a competitive candidate who has most of the points available: I've got a good GPA of 3.91 which is 38/40 points, I've completed all the prereqs, got A's in all three courses of the A&P series, taken microbio and chemistry and have a previous associates degree -- the only points I didn't get were the two from my GPA and the points for taking prereqs at the host institution, which I hope doesn't hurt too bad. I guess the uncertainty comes from the fact that I don't know who else is throwing their name in the pot -- there could be a bunch of applicants who've made all the points and edge me out.

Are you doing anything to get ready aside from taking courses (such as volunteering or shadowing a nurse)? How do you like it?

One of the night shift RN's just graduated from the program and we're some of the only males who work in our facility. He's my friend out of work and has been giving advice and encouragement throughout the application process.

I have been accepted to one school, and am waiting for the other two to get back to me.

Thanks emmjay for starting this thread!

I applied to five schools, Cal State East Bay, Chabot, Ohlone, Merritt (NOT Samuel Merritt for those who know how expensive it is...), and City College San Francisco. They're all CC except for CSUEB, but they all have a seamless ADN to BSN transition program in place with the local university, so I'm actually hoping to get into one of the CC to save money that way, then complete the online BSN.

I finished all the pre-reqs for all five schools ( I made a chart cross-referencing all the schools and their various pre-reqs, not all the same!), so now I'm just getting my last GE requirements out of the way: US history and Government, and Archery for P.E.

The first deadline for some of these schools was back in November 2015, and the last deadline is coming up in March, but I already turned everything in, and I'm just waiting until May when all schools will mail out their responses, or post the lottery results on their website.

I am a married mother of three, and my baby will be starting highschool in the fall; I feel if there was ever going to be a good time other than wait until they are all out of the house to go back to school, now would be it... I haven't lied to my family about how hard nursing school is going to be, but I may have left out some details so they don't freak out; and I am just relying on my great time management skills to make it as painless an experience as possible...

I am excited, scared, nervous, happy, ecstatic, impatient...

I already work as a CNA on a med-surg floor so I'm comfortable around patients, and as sson as I get the book list from whatever school I get into, I am going to start reading immediately to get a heads up before the first day of class.

Good luck everyone! I feel like getting ready for nursing school was a huge challenge in and of itself already! Good job for getting through it!

So nice to see some activity in here!!! I got accepted to the one and only school I applied to a little over a week ago.... so thankful I didn't have to wait for weeks and weeks on a letter :) Now I'm making A&P flash cards and studying up on my algebra and chemistry. My main focus is making sure I know A&P backwards and forwards - benefits of having taken it prior to applying, I guess. So excited to start in the fall!!!
