Fall 2019 Lonestar Hopefuls

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey everybody. I'm not sure if it's too early but I'm making this page for anybody who is applying to the nursing program at Lonestar College for the Fall of 2019. Looks like Montgomery, Cyfair, and North Harris have applications from Jan 7-April 12. Good luck to everyone!

I haven’t bought anything, don’t know if I should without knowing if I got in or not lol.

Same here! I think I'll wait until I see if I got in or not.

Aren’t they like $200-$250? The lab bag

Yes they are in that price range but it has everything you need for all your skills

Is it like that for all campuses? As far as the lab bag having everything except the stethoscope?

Hahaha my Amazon wish list is long. I heard you didn’t have to buy the pack. As long as you get what’s needed. It may be cheaper to buy things yourself.

I’m super cheap... I would probably find everything on amazon, even renting books lol. Rented microbiology text through amazon for like $60 this semester, pretty deal considering it was the hard cover text. Anyone have a list of all the books for the program? Does it vary per campus? And once you buy the books, it’s for the rest of the program?

I’m definitely going through amazon for books! Already saved them

Do you have the list of books? Do you mind sharing lol I want to look as well.

Things not in the lab pack I found useful:

1) A Schedule/Planner/Reminder system with redundencies to prevent missed assignments. The overwhelming reason I've heard from 2nd attempt students as for the reason that they failed was missed assignments that brought down their grade. I use the passion planner, a desk calendar, a dry erase calendar in my bathroom, a master planner in my binder, and I make an assignment list consolidating EVERY assignment, exam, and due date into a chronological list that is on the front on my binder that I highlight as I go.

2) Items:
-If you're ADD, like me, I found myself sometimes forgetting my pen light between lab, clinical, etc. These aren't the best for assessments, so I still always try and remember the pen light, but I put one of these on my badge so no matter what, I have a light.

-This clipboard comes in many different colors. I honestly don't really use any of the info but it folds and fits in my cargo pocket which is super handy during clinical. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GXMQ918/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

-In Integrated programs you have to go topic by topic, but the Saunders NCLEX book was helpful for me for lecture test prep. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0323358519/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s03?ie=UTF8&psc=1

-A laser printer. I have a black and white only version that was around $100. It's fast, prints 2-sided, and one cartridge lasts just over a semester. I can get around 3,000 pages for about $75 with the brand-name cartridge. This is the updated version of mine. https://www.amazon.com/Brother-Monochrome-HL-L2350DW-Two-Sided-Replenishment/dp/B0763WDSYZ/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3P5IL0BH4LLO1&keywords=brother+laser+printer&qid=1556033942&s=office-products&sprefix=brother+las%2Coffice-products%2C165&sr=1-3

A Badge Clip - no one in Montgomery has a felt clip so I don't know the policy on them. The only no go I know of is anything that say's "RN" or represents a licensed position. Essentially, the same rules as the usernames for allnurses. No representing yourself as a "nurse" or "RN." Other than that, it can be a badge reel/clip of your choice. I don't remember if lanyards were banned or not, but I can't imagine using a lanyard. (which I did for my last office job.)

Other than the above the only other purchases I made were uniforms, stationary items (binders, flashcards, highlighters, computer paper, etc), and my stethoscope. Some programs make you order your scrubs through the program, I believe. In Montgomery we only had guidelines... As for books, the discounted package through school was cheaper than piecing it together online... but that leads me to...

You'll be given some information with your acceptance but you will receive most of the information at orientation. I know there were changes between our class and 2nd years so be prudent in going off of information from previous AND current students. As the NCLEX and evidence based practice of nursing evolves, so do the programs.

Just keep breathing and enjoy this time of excitement. The stress is coming... ?
