Fall 2021 College of the Desert

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi All! ?

I just wanted to start a thread for those trying to apply to College of the Desert for Fall 2020. At this point, all that's left for me is to take the TEAS, double check that my science classes will be accepted and that they'll accept my communications class. I'm nervous and excited all at once! Any tips or advice people have heard about the program? Any other random information or tid bits that people know about the program is welcome too! ?

Oh wow interesting. Thank you for sharing.

I would definitely call the department of nursing. I asked her if she was put as an alternate for the regular RN and she said yes. If it’s going by points you should’ve been put as an alternate as well since you have more points. Maybe there was something wrong with your application?

Thank you. I'm definitely going to call them. I sent out a few emails already. Hopefully we can figure this out!

Congratulations you guys that's very odd that I had 50 points and didn't even get picked as an alternate.

Hi,

I am a 1st semester nursing student at COD. We had someone with the same situation as you (people with lower points either accepted or selected as an alternate). It turned out to be a mistake. It doesn't hurt to ask. Contact professor Lisa Kinsey to see if it can be double checked to make sure there wasn't an error. Good luck!

I got in!

I will also say that people in the nursing department were totally helpful and responsive to an issue I had. I wouldn't hesitate to bring any issues to them.

Hello! I was wondering since you’re a first semester nursing student at COD if you don’t mind sharing the schedule you have? Like the times and days you have theory and clinical. Someone in my Spring 2022 cohort also asked if you could share your syllabus with him. I understand if you don’t feel comfortable though!

Hi,

So for 1st semester, the cohort is split into 2. There's a group that attends theory on Mon/Thur from 8:45am to like 10:45am or something and then they do their clinicals (hospital rotation) 4hrs, then 4hrs on campus in lab, then come back for a second day of 4hrs in the hospital (so a day and a half of hands on nursing skills) and then they get Friday off. The other group goes to theory Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:35pm. They have Tuesday off and then go to skills lab/hospital on Thur/Friday (half day). As far as the syllabus, they are big on academic integrity and so a new, different syllabus is written each semester so it won't be the same as mine. Also, keep in mind, the syllabus is FILLED with information, not just read pages 6-8. No, our syllabus is 100 pages because it includes all the info necessary for the program, student handbook, etc. In nursing school, the syllabus doesn't tell you what to read or do, it just tells you what topics to look up in your text book. There's also no study guide for exams. You have to figure out the important things to focus on and the test questions are NCLEX style questions that the professor writes for each exam so there's no chance of gleaning answers from anyone else. This is as detailed as I can get at this point. Any other questions, let me know and I'll do my best to answer. Congrats on your admission!

Are both cohorts 4 days a week ?
