failed rn school 2x.dont want to quit so going for lpn school

Published

hi.i am ashamed to tell my nursing school misadventures but right now,i just need advice really bad.i am very depressed and confused right now.i first started nursing at a bsn school but failed after taking fundamentals.so i transferred to an associate's rn school, got in.When i was almost in my last semester,i failed 2x and got dismissed from the program.i was very depressed.i let my whole family down, even my grandparents from overseas were even supposed to come to my graduation this year .I am either laughed at by people or yelled at by parents.Instead of encouraging me not to give up,my husband blames me everyday saying im too dumb i failed(it hurts me and makes me cry)Believe it or not,i have been fighting to graduate nursing school for the 7th year now.Nursing is really what my heart wants.I want to be a nurse so I decided I will take one step back from being an RN,which is being an LPN.If being an RN is too overwhelming for me,maybe I can handle less duties being an LPN.When I feel comfortable, then I plan to do an LPN to RN.

Right now,I am starting LPN school, this is my 3rd and last try in nursing school(hopefully I will make it with God's help). 1) Has anybody ever failed RN school and successfully became an LPN later? 2) Also, with my situation being out of RN school and going LPN school,am I still eligible to work as a nurse tech?I already completed Med Surg from RN school.I am also still going to attend a nursing school even if it is just LPN school.I really need a job to earn money for my family.Without it,we will up in the streets because my husband is low income also.I cannot work as CNA because my LPN school is already gonna be 5 days/week and if I work on saturday as aide, that would be too much already for my body to handle.Im not even sure if I will pass LPN school if I work because that would leave me with only 1 day left( Sunday) to study. If it wasn't for my family's financial needs during this tough economy,I would have given up because I am already tired of failing.I want to stand up from this failure but everytime I try to motivate myself to never give up,people always try to bring me down.Im either laughed at by friends or yelled at by family.I dont want to quit nursing.I am a very nice person and I really care about my patiets. Can somebody please give me an advice what to do?

I'm sorry to hear that you have had some tough times getting through school. Have you identified where/what area(s)you are struggling with? I hope your schools have helped you in this matter and discussed with you what you need to do or change, if not, I would get with them to find out.

I am very sad to hear that your husband is not being more supportive. My husband is even appalled at his remarks to you. Regardless of how much you are struggling with this, your family shouldn't kick you while your down.

If you got to your last semester in an ADN program, wouldn't that mean you've already completed the LPN portion? I'm in an ADN program now and after the 1st year (we go by quarters), we can challenge the LPN boards. Have faith in yourself. When I decided to try for a RN career, I kept being told I'd make a great PA or Nurse Prac. I know myself too well and do better with "baby steps". Granted they do differ, but there are many nurses that go on to be PA's. I feel better when I really "know" the first level. I feel more confident moving up onto the next level. There is no such thing as "just an...LPN" or RN, etc. Every level and job is just as important as the other. Set out to be the best damn LPN! :) Show everyone that taking a couple steps back does not mean you are there forever (or that you are "too stupid"). Remember, it doesn't stop with school. There are some that can pass school with flying colors but struggle to pass the NCLEX. I know I didn't specifically answer your questions, but I hope that I can pass on a little bit of encouragement to keep you on track. Since I don't know exactly why you are struggling to get through school, it's hard to say whether nursing is the right path for you. But you know yourself better than anyone; so if it's what you want, get on that phone and find out what you need to do to get there. Think about standing on that podium saying "when everyone said I couldn't do it, I did"

GOOD LUCK! :)

If you think going the LPN route is going to be easier, less stressful or involve fewer duties, I think you're in for an unpleasant surprise. If you find nursing to be overwhelming, but are interested in the medical field, you might want to look at other health professions, like ultrasound or radiology technology, dental hygiene, phlebotomy, medical coding or medical assisting. There are many ways to help care for patients...you'll find a way that suits you! :yeah:

I am not trying to sound negative but don't force something. If its not meant to be..... its not.

thanks for all the replies, both good or bad.i respect all of your opinions.i really want to pursue nursing still and if this last try doesnt work out, then i may find some other field.thank you.

Have you looked into seeing if you are already eligible to take the LPN NCLEX? If you completed half of your RN program successfully, including clinical, you may be eligible to sit for the LPN boards without going back to school. First check with your state Board to see if that option is allowed in your state. If it is, then go to your RN school where you finished more than half the program and get them to sign off on your application to take the NCLEX-PN. If this route is possible for you, you can enter the workforce that much earlier and start preparing yourself to enter an LPN to RN bridge program. Good luck.

Wow, your posting sounds like the same post I had up a couple of months ago. I too failed a BSN program than went to an ADN program and also failed. Than in 08 tried out for the LPN program and was successful. Believe me, your story is exactly what I went through in nursing school. LPN wasn't easy, but I wouldn't say it was too hard either because the other schools I was comming from was even tougher, no nonsence. From a person who went through what you went through...the best advice I can give is to do the LPN track. No, you may not be a RN, but your a NURSE. At lease when your an LPN your comfortable with the pay. You than, if you desire go back to school and do LPN to RN track. By than you would've already gained some experience and know more than your classmates. Girlfriend, it's not the end of the world. I know exactly how you feel. If nursing is what you want to be, than Nursing is what you will be. And also, if you believe in a higher power that created you and knows your beginning and your end, ask him for guidance, wisdom, and mostly understanding. Good luck sweetie.

Whether or not nursing is meant for you, I do hope you can find a better support group than what you currently have. Friends who would laugh at you b/c you have failed out of school are not really friends. A husband who calls you stupid and degrades you is NOT holding up to his marital vows and undeserving of your affection and devotion. Parents have no business to be yelling at their adult child's school performance, unless they are financially supporting you so you can go to school. Even then I would hope they are thoughtful in the way they voice their concerns.

I truly hope that it is a misperception of how you are viewing those around you, because I can't imagine going through life being laughed at and ridiculed by those who are supposed to care about me.

Like someone else mentioned, you do need to find out why it is you are failing out of these programs and if this is something you can overcome.

This comment is very negative and just to let you know... My mother failed nursing school a total of 3 times. Twice while in LPN school and Once while in RN school. Well today she's been a LPN for 4 years and Just became a RN in March. Just because you fail nursing school a few times doesn't mean its not meant to be. :angryfire

Just wanted to point out that most states do not allow this anymore - unless the program was specifically designed that way. I do believe there may be a few states out there that still allow this, but they are few and far between. I know for sure that NYS does not allow this as of 2007. But it is still worthwhile to check, just don't want to get the OPs hopes up too much.

To the OP, yes I have known those that failed out of RN school and successfully got through LPN school. To me, it would be worth trying if this is what you really want. I started in LPN school and am currently in RN school. They are different.

If you actually got in to the RN prog that tells me that you are capable of doing this. Nursing school isnt easy BUT dont give up!

As for you're husbands lack of support....:angryfire:angryfire:angryfire:angryfire:angryfire
