Failed my first NCLEX. Advice :D

Published

I took a 7 day off from studying and get ready to get back in track again. What I did during my first exam: Kaplan QB, Hurst, and some NCLEX 3500. I average anything around 60%-65% on the Kaplan QB and 90, 72, 84, 85 out of the 125 Hurst Mock Exam. I studied for 5 hours each day, for 4 times a week due to work for 3 weeks after graduation. What I noticed about my NCLEX:

-I had 150Q

-In my opinion, it was as hard as Kaplan QB

-The computer knew my weakness :( Airborne/Droplet/Contact/Standard Qs. The computer asked me these questions about 40 times and I noticed that it started asking me level 1 Question and I still missed it :(

-My questions were mostly prioritization (about 30 of them) and maybe 20+ SATA and 10 Drag and drop

-Some drug Qs (maybe 2)

-Alot of endocrine (maybe 10)

-Peds and OBs

need advice:

I don't know what to do right now, I did the saunders assessment exam and got a 77% and doing their calendar. I'm not sure what to study at this point, I read rationales every time I do questions. Guys, I just need to know what I can do at this point? focus on content and Qs? I really don't know :(

wow, my grammar is so bad. I haven't written anything this long for so long. Please excuse my grammar. I don't know how to edit my sentences so please excuse my grammar

I am sorry that you didn't pass. You will get a ton of good info on here from people who've been there.

My Kaplan scores are where yours are and I'm weak in Airborne/Droplet/Contact/Standard too! I can't keep them all straight!! Also, I'm not a huge fan of endocrine and can easily get confused there too!! :eek:

I better get back to the books!!

malemurse, sorry to hear :(. It's great you are ready to get back up and try again. Have you received your CPR? Once you receive that report I would focus on the stated weak areas. Since you identified what you feel are your weak areas in your initial post, you could start doing as many questions as you can on those topics while you wait for the report. Do you still have access to Hurst? Try to focus on their infection control topics located in the extra materials as they lay out precautions to be taken with common infectious diseases.

Ok, I got the letter in the mail and says I failed. I got near passing for all 8 sections :( I thought I was really bad at infection control but I guess not I was at near passing. Ok, I'm willing to buy a new app/review material. Which one would you guys recommend after doing hurst and kaplan?

I didn't really watch the hurst videos and took the mock exams only. thanks :D I plan to take my exam in 6 weeks :D thanks in advice.

The issue may not necessarily the source of the review, but how one approaches the NCLEX itself: understanding the four concepts of becoming a competent, entry-level nurse:

1. Safe, effective care;

2.Health promotion;

3.Physiological Integrity;

4.Psychosocial integrity

Will determine WHAT the question is asking you; the question may be Respiratory related-but is it a Health Promotion or a Safety, or a Physiological or a Psychosocial one? Would you know the difference and choose the BEST answer?

Once one understands the concepts of NCLEX, they can do so successfully.

It appears the you need to learn to understand WHAT the question is asking you; THEN review the rationales, THEN if you don't understand the rationale, look to the sources of information.

Best wishes.

If you took Hurst previously you are eligible for sitting in on another live review free. You can also pay $50 fee and have access to the online video lessons for 30 days. I am in the process of 're-reviewing Hurst myself plus I purchased the 3 week NCSBN review. I take the NCLEX for the 3rd time on August 20th. Good luck on your next test...believe in yourself.
