failed clinicals dismissed from RN program

Published

my teacher failed me in clinicals in cardiac. i had a needlestick the last day of clinicals, but she said that wasn't why she failed me. i called her after going to get my needlestick checked out, and she said i was going to fail clinicals. she said that she had other things on me. i took the last test plus the final after that. i knew i had to take the course again, and i wanted to learn as much as i could. my written and computer test grades were all passing (above 80%). i applied for reinstatement and i got a letter stating:

"the nursing resinstatement committee has reviewed your petition for reinstatement into nursing 222. the committee has determined that you are ineligible to reinstate and have been dismissed from the nursing program."

it goes on to say that i can contact career planning and placement for assistance in selecting other occupations. there wasn't even a signature on the letter. it just said "nursing reinstatement committee".

i could tell from the first day of class that the teacher definitely did not like me. one day in clinicals she said i made her nervous.

if i can take cardiac over, i only have four (5.5 week) classes and one 11 week class after that to finish. there are 2 other teachers that teach this class. people who fail theory are given 2 tries and sometimes 3 tries to pass the same class. there are some nursing students that have failed 2 or 3 different nursing classes and are still in the rn program. i have never come close to failing a class before. i have excellent grades. i have worked as a pct in a hospital on weekends since september so i am getting more hands on experience all the time . i am waiting for the appeals process form to be e-mailed to me so i can fill it out. if i don't get reinstated, the nursing department will have a long battle to fight. i have received much verbal support from other students and rn graduates. if i have to go outside of the school, i have already checked into some organizations that are willing to help me.

i plan on taking a phlebotomy course, in the meantime, until i can get reinstated. this requires 25 hours of clinical experience. i think this will help strengthen my clinical skills.

please give me your input.

So when you say you failed the cardiac, was this the last of your clinical's for the term? I don't understand why they are not going to reinstate you? And can they really do this?

I am so depressed... Today I got my mid term evaluation for the clinical portion(I am a LPN- RN bidge student and this is the 3rd semester). The instructor said that I need to build up my self confidence and comunicate better with patients... English is my second language, and I think that the whole thing is about discrimination. We are 75 students and only 3 are from another country. She said that I can make up in the next 8 weeks. I will have another instructor, but I am very discouraged. I see other people doing a lot worse than I am, but she does not see that. If I fail the next 8 weeks, I am going to appeal. Do you guys know anybody in this situation?

I apreciatte any feedback.

Well it's only a midterm eval. Self-confidence for me only comes by doing over and over. I got a compliment from a rebound patient this rotation about how much confidence I'd gained in just three weeks between first and second admit.

I'm also terribly shy with new people and find it difficult to talk to them. My ADHD has me jumping from topic to topic sometimes too. I've had to make myself focus and force myself to talk to people. Nothing beats a smile and Good Morning-even if the response is yeah!! sure, you're not in this bed with the tubes.

I think when you get your new instructor got to them and tell them my last instructor said I needed to work on this and this, do you have any suggestions??

Today, I was called to the office to talk to my clinical and theory instructors. They wanted to remind me that this Friday is the last day to withdraw and get a "W". I failed midterm clinicals evaluation and last Friday was my first day of clinical for the last 8 weeks. My clinical intructor said that I am not performing as a 3rd Semester Student (RN program). I do not agree with that, I am doing better than a lot of students, but I am been graded differently. I am Latino, English is my second language and I do feel that this is the reason. We are 85, students and I am the only Latino in the pogram, this Semester. I told them how I feel and that I am not going to drop. So, basically I have 4 clinicals to prove that I can do it. Do you guys think that I have any chance? I told them that I am going to appeal if I fail. Do you guys know if my school refuses my appeal, is there a State Agency that I can appeal:cry: to the schools decision?

Just a clarification, I change my username from triplet's mom to Novavida. Thanks

I feel your pain to the max!!! I too was dismissed from the program after failing 2 semesters. The last semester of Nursing school I only needed 2 credits to complete my degree and they decided to dismissed me because the "committee" decided after interviewing 8 other students that I didn't give them a sufficient reason to stay in the program and that nothing out of the ordinary happened during the time I failed the course. .. I was devastated and because I knew for a fact that there were other students that were readmitted to the program after failing 2 and 3 times, I was not gonna let that pass! I appealed my dismissal thru the chain of command of the college not the Nursing program! listen to me and FIGHT BACK!! these people do not care about what you been trough to be in school! Good luck to you, find out where you can go and fight for your rights! I did and got reinstated back into the program and graduated, now an official RN *)

RosaRN09,

Thank you so much for your response, it is a huge incentive to me!Yesterday, I also talked to a counselor and I was surprise with her answer, she said : " you're not the first student who came here with the same complain, I had once a male hispanic student who had a similar situation , but this is ..... Community college, look around you, look around the Nurse program, they do not like minority. You should appeal". When I asked her which are usually the outcomes from those appeal, she said :" It is usually never in the student favor, but if the Comitte have enough cases like yours, maybe they start to change"

So, did you need a Lawyer? What kind of documments did you show, besides the appeal letter? Did you get reinstated in the same semester? Sorry for ask so many questions and cogratulations for your achievement!

I wrote a long reply and some how it didn't post! agrrr! Anyways I will tell you that I did not hire a lawyer, thank God it wasn't necessary. I read all the policies & procedures from the Nursing Handbook and informed myself of the steps to take in case of an appealed desicion.

Since I had the meeting with the committee and they decided that I wasn't going to be re-admitted to the program, this is what I did:

1. Meeting with committee

2. Meeting with the director alone/Dean of the Nursing Program.(which it didn't work out of course)

3. Send letter tru email to the Provost Office, every college has one! Check who is the person in charge and check how to get in contact with this person, if it's via email then send a honest and complete letter tru emal stating your argument and what is that you want. You want fairness and a good resolution! This person serves as a student advocate and investigates the problem. If this person cannot help you she/he will refer you to the appropiate depts. At last if no one in the College can help you then you go for a Laywer...

But remember that you must follow the chain of comand.

Do you know of students that were readmitted back to the program that were in the same situation as you?

Best of luck and may God give you the strenght and corage to fight back!

take care...

Oh and yes got reinstaled in the same semester (last one), and more shocking 2 of my friends were in the same situation as me and we got together and spoke to different higher depts. To our surprise all 3 of us that went foward to fight for our rights got into the program, same semester and happily graduated, now RNs... So please do not let these people take you life away. And if it dosen't happen in that College there are lots of other schools around :)

Thank you so much! I will let you know how things are going. But, I am not giving up!

Hi everyone, I am posting my message also in this forum too. please I need help. Last semester I fought back and I passed it! This semester (4th) I only had one day og clinical and they are treating to dismisse me. My clinical instructor is now the DON of the program, and she gave a deadline : if I do not show impprovemebt this week, I will be dismissed. She saying that I am not at 4th semester level and I am not safe. This week, I had a LASIX to give and i did not have time to look for the potassium level( it was not in the chart and all the computer were busy) I told her that I WOULD not give berore knowing the levels, but she did not like the fact that she pulled the med from the cart. I had hard time hanging an IV piggybag and I entered wrong info in the computer ( which I corrected it). Should I dropp before been dismissed from the program? Should I stay and if they dismisse me , fight back? Please help!

So... my mid term evals come up and my instructor is telling me about my time management, (mind you my patients were up to date with morning care, meds, assessments, bfst... and i was helping other nurses in the floor, doing dressing changes for them and starting IV lines) and my instructor is telling me that i have to work on my time management... so I say, ok! will do, but can you point me how, because i ran out of things to do... so she said, that she only said that because she needs to tell me that we always have to find room for improvement, and she could not give me all good on my report, so she decided that i have to manage my time better! (mind you i was the first to get my evals done since i was up to par with my documentation!) Ah, and she said that i talk too loud (she did not know that i am part deaf)..

but guys it seems that you all have cranky old ladies for instructors ewwwwww.

They all sound like a pain in the butt!

all i could say is get into a routine, get your clinical sheet with all relevant data, i have posted one here before, make sure that you have at least the relevant data on hand, meds and their times, labs, specially the out of range ones, test results, and a little about their history, and just go to the nurse for your patient and ask her the plane of care (upcoming tests or anything like that) so if your instructor ask you a whole lot of stuff, you have enough info to get by. (off course you will get all the info necessary, but the basics will get you by on the first couple of hours.)
