Failed a class - should I appeal??

Published

ok so here is my dilemma - After reviewing the grading policy (below) states that any core classes that are rewarded a "D" is considered as failing and require retake:

A = 90-100%

B = 80-89%

C = 70-79%

D = 60-69%

F = 59% or below

I took Reproductive Health with EC online and received a 69.28%!! I called the school and was advised that I have to re-take the entire course because i am .72% short from a "C" which is passing. I think its ridiculous, I can't afford to pay another $1500.00 (approx.) for the course, the instructor is not responding to any of my emails (i guess because class is over) and I don't want to cause problems for myself if I appeal (retaliation) - anyone have any advise?

thanks

If we don't make 78%, we fail in my program. You're lucky that your school doesn't have that grading scale. Honestly, I know this seems harsh, but would you want to be treated by a nurse that was making 69% in nursing school?

Here is the current grading scale for the local BSN program.

A -- Excellent = 92 - 100

B -- Above Average = 84 - 91

C -- Average = 77 - 83

D -- Failing (Below Average) = 67 - 76

F -- Failing = below 67The passing standard for all nursing classes is 77

I taught in a BSN program. Students would argue about "failing by less then one point" when in fact it was perhaps as noted above it was 100 points or more. Final grades are percentages for the whole course. If there were 1000 possible points, the OP only earned 698.2 points missing 301 points, NOT 0.72 point.

Exactly...and if each question was worth 2 pts (for example) then OP missed 150 questions...sounds a lot different than 0.72% doesn't it

Correct. I was also shocked at how many students could not calculate their current grade average after each exam. I ended up having to post current average after each exam. Then there were the ones in first semester of nursing program that never looked at their current average and thought they were doing fine ( "But I have a 72, that's a C. ") No, in nursing that's an F.

Thank you all for your Kind, Not So Kind and honest words of opinion. I spoke with my instructor and she explained to me why the grade was the way it was. I will re-take the class - lesson learned!
